Job Overview:
The Associate Director, Environmental and Social Specialist will play a crucial role in the Environment and Sustainability Division (ESD) of the EBRD. This position involves working closely with sector heads and directors to ensure that the Bank's Environmental and Social Policy commitments are met. The Associate Director will be responsible for the appraisal and monitoring of complex and high-risk projects, providing specialist input, and overseeing a range of projects across various sectors. The role requires a deep understanding of environmental and social appraisal processes, as well as the ability to interact with banking teams and other departments to drive sustainable development initiatives. The Associate Director will also be expected to represent the ESD at various forums and contribute to the development of sector and country strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Director will manage and oversee a variety of projects, including complex and high-risk initiatives. Key responsibilities include: providing technical management and specialist input for project assessments; overseeing compliance with the Environmental and Social Policy; conducting analytical and technical reviews; developing and implementing methodologies; managing project outputs and outcomes; negotiating environmental and social contract terms; liaising with EBRD staff, clients, and consultants; and representing the ESD at meetings and events. The Associate Director will also be responsible for delivering capacity-building initiatives, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to the continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures. Additionally, the role involves preparing sustainability-related reports and ensuring adherence to the Bank's behavioral competencies and corporate behaviors.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks and impacts is essential. Candidates should have knowledge of international environmental and social standards, financing instruments, and policies related to environmental and social governance. Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently or lead teams, and effective communication skills are also required. Familiarity with the countries in which the Bank operates is advantageous, as is experience in project management and stakeholder engagement.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental science, social science, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in environmental and social governance will be given preference. Professional certifications related to environmental and social risk assessment are also beneficial.

Experience:
Candidates should have significant experience in environmental and social risk assessment, particularly in relation to complex and high-risk projects. A background in project management, particularly in a financial institution or similar organization, is highly desirable. Experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams and engaging with senior stakeholders is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Familiarity with a language spoken in the EBRD's countries of operation is advantageous, and for positions based in resident offices, local language fluency will be required.
