Job Posting Organization: The ITER Organization (IO) is a pioneering international research and engineering project aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of nuclear fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy. Established to advance the development of fusion energy, the organization operates in a multi-cultural environment and encourages diversity among its workforce. The ITER project is a collaborative effort involving multiple countries, and the organization is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace that values diverse perspectives. The IO believes that a diversified workforce is essential for addressing the complex challenges associated with fusion energy research. The organization emphasizes its CARE values: Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence, which guide its operations and interactions among employees.
Job Overview: The Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) Technician position at the ITER Organization offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to one of the most ambitious fusion energy projects in the world. The role involves performing independent NDE inspections related to assigned systems and ensuring that NDE activities are properly implemented across the assigned scope. The NDE Technician will be responsible for reviewing applicable NDE procedures, written practices, and associated NDE records. This position is crucial for maintaining the quality assurance standards within the Quality Management Division, which oversees independent monitoring and quality assurance activities throughout all phases of the ITER project. The NDE Technician will play a key role in optimizing NDE processes during the design, manufacturing, assembly, installation, and commissioning of ITER components and systems, ensuring that the highest standards of quality and safety are upheld.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the NDE Technician include implementing NDE procedures, methods, and techniques at manufacturing facilities and on the ITER site. The technician will review NDE procedures, demonstrate and validate NDE reports, and provide input for optimizing NDE processes. Routine and unscheduled NDE inspections will be performed at both IO premises and supplier locations, with the technician witnessing intermediate and final NDE inspections. Additionally, the technician will contribute to resolving disputes related to NDE by authenticating or conducting NDE to verify and crosscheck results obtained during tests. The role also involves improving the quality culture within the ITER project by supporting technical training on NDE methods and inspections. The position requires flexibility, as it may involve shift work and on-call duties to ensure continuous operations and service delivery to stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess proven experience in NDE activities associated with component design, testing, construction, and/or manufacturing of pressure equipment, particularly in the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industries. Essential competencies include specifying, planning, and executing non-destructive testing activities, as well as maintaining the associated equipment and tools. Candidates should demonstrate competence in preserving quality and integrity while ensuring compliance with safety standards. Experience in manufacturing processes and quality control is also required, with a proven ability to verify compliance of components with applicable requirements. Familiarity with ISO standards or ASME codes, particularly in relation to NDE methods such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Penetrant Testing (PT), and Visual Testing (VT) is desirable.
Educational Background: A master's degree in engineering, specifically in mechanical engineering or a relevant discipline, is essential for this position. Candidates with equivalent qualifications or extensive professional experience involving similar responsibilities may also be considered. Additional training certificates in relevant domains may substitute for formal education requirements, particularly if they demonstrate a strong foundation in NDE practices and principles.
Experience: Candidates should have a solid background in NDE activities, particularly in the context of the nuclear industry or other highly regulated sectors. Proven experience in non-destructive testing, including the ability to specify, plan, and execute testing activities, is essential. The role requires familiarity with quality assurance processes and the ability to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations. Experience in manufacturing processes and quality control is also important, as the technician will be involved in verifying the quality and integrity of components throughout the ITER project.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they enhance communication within the diverse international team at ITER.
Additional Notes: The position offers an initial employment contract of up to five years, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project needs. The selection process aims to fill the current vacancy while also creating a reserve list of candidates for future positions. The reserve list will remain valid for two years, with the potential for extension at the discretion of the Director-General. The role may require shift work and on-call availability, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, depending on project demands. A valid driving license in France is required for staff expected to work outside standard hours, as no commuting vehicle will be provided by the ITER Organization. The ITER Organization is committed to equal opportunity and diversity in the workplace.
