Job Overview: The Africa Division Intern position at Human Rights Watch is designed for university students who are interested in gaining practical experience in the field of human rights, specifically focusing on South Africa and Eswatini. Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for conducting desk research, which includes completing small research assignments related to human rights issues in South Africa and Eswatini. They will monitor media coverage and compile reports on relevant news, conduct data analysis to identify key issues, and draft documents that address these issues. Additionally, the intern will attend and assist in planning substantive meetings, and may be assigned other projects that align with their interests and abilities. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience in research, analysis, and advocacy within the context of human rights work.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program for the duration of the internship. Proficiency in reading and writing in English is essential, as is a strong interest in human rights, particularly concerning the South African region. Relevant coursework in human rights, social sciences, or related fields is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate strong organizational skills, self-motivation, reliability, and attention to detail.
