Job Overview:
As a Natural Resource engineer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Management Engineer at CERN, you will play a crucial role in supporting the organization’s commitment to environmental sustainability, particularly in the area of biodiversity. Your primary responsibilities will include establishing and monitoring indicators to track biodiversity evolution on CERN sites, continuing efforts on light pollution, creating hedgerow networks, and mapping wetlands. You will centralize all biodiversity-related data and inventories, such as those concerning bats and lichens, and provide your expertise to implement necessary protection measures. Field presence is essential to verify compliance with environmental rules and best practices on construction and maintenance sites. Regular field visits will also be required to monitor invasive species and habitats of interest, as well as to follow up on protection and compensation measures like orchid transplantation or nesting box maintenance. Additionally, you will promote biodiversity awareness and best practices through Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) communication, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and engaged in these initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Establish and monitor biodiversity indicators to track changes and trends on CERN sites.
  • Continue work on light pollution mitigation, hedgerow network creation, and wetland mapping.
  • Centralize and manage biodiversity-related data and inventories, including species such as bats and lichens.
  • Provide biodiversity expertise for the implementation of protection measures.
  • Ensure field presence to verify adherence to environmental rules and best practices on construction and maintenance sites.
  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor invasive species and habitats of interest.
  • Follow up on protection and compensation measures, including orchid transplantation and nesting box maintenance.
  • Promote biodiversity awareness and best practices through effective HSE communication strategies.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance biodiversity initiatives and ensure compliance with regulations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in biodiversity monitoring, including experience with fauna and flora inventories. Knowledge of EU regulations regarding biodiversity, particularly French and Swiss environmental regulations, is essential. Applicants should have experience in developing environmental indicators to assess habitat and species trends, as well as managing and consolidating ecological inventories and field data. Strong skills in promoting biodiversity awareness and effective communication are also required.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate will hold either a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Natural Resource Management or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those with a PhD will also be disqualified. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in environmental science, ecology, or a closely related discipline.

Experience:
Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Natural Resource Management or a related field. This experience should ideally include practical work in biodiversity monitoring, environmental management, or related areas, demonstrating the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being highly desirable. This bilingual capability is essential for effective communication within the diverse CERN community and for engaging with various stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The position is fully onsite and requires a commitment to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, as well as in radiation areas. A valid driving license is also necessary. The contract duration is initially set for 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months.
