Job Overview: The Radio Operator position is crucial for ensuring effective communication and safety within the Danish Refugee Council's operations in Syria. The primary responsibility of the Radio Operator is to monitor and record all movements of Humanitarian Mine Action Senior Management, Non-Technical Survey (NTS) and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) teams, as well as Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Training Teams (EOD MTT). This role involves using various communication methods, including radio and phone, to maintain contact with designated Points of Contact within the teams or with individuals directly. The Radio Operator is expected to keep accurate written records of all communications and movements, ensuring that the safety of field staff is prioritized. The position requires flexibility in working hours to accommodate operational needs, and the Radio Operator must contribute to the overall safety of all staff members by adhering to DRC's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety rules. This role is vital for the smooth operation of humanitarian efforts in a challenging environment, and the Radio Operator will play a key part in facilitating communication and coordination among teams in the field.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Radio Operator will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to: monitoring all movements of staff via radio, phone, or other means, ensuring communication with nominated Points of Contact; maintaining up-to-date information on staff whereabouts during work hours; promptly informing the Operations Manager or technical Field Manager of any incidents affecting staff safety or DRC operations; generating and filing daily communications logs; maintaining communication equipment such as mobile phones, satellite phones, and radios; being available for flexible working hours to meet operational needs; ensuring compliance with the HMA Communication tree; contributing to the safety of all staff members; supporting HMA management during communication downtimes in coordination with the Operations Manager; and performing any other reasonable tasks as requested by HDP Managers in coordination with the HMA Operations Manager.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Radio Operator position must meet several required qualifications, including at least two years of experience in a similar role. A strong knowledge of communication equipment, including radios and satellite phones, is essential. Additionally, candidates should possess advanced proficiency in English, both written and spoken, to effectively communicate in a multilingual environment. Proficiency in computer skills is also necessary to manage communication logs and reports efficiently.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a High School diploma under the Syrian Education System or an equivalent qualification. Candidates should also demonstrate proficiency in the use of MS Office applications, which are essential for maintaining communication logs and documentation.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience in a similar role, particularly in communication and monitoring within humanitarian or emergency response contexts. This experience is crucial for understanding the dynamics of field operations and ensuring effective communication among teams in challenging environments.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Arabic is mandatory for this position. Candidates must be able to speak, read, and write proficiently in both languages to facilitate effective communication with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The Radio Operator position is classified as a non-management role (Level J1) and is based in Rural Damascus, Syria. The contract length is for several months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and available funding. The expected start date for this position is as soon as possible.
