Job Overview: This internship is based in the Ozone Secretariat at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Communications and Public Information Officer, the intern will work with and learn from a team of experienced professionals. The internship offers an opportunity to deepen understanding of the work under the ozone treaties, develop skills in conceptualizing, developing, and deploying global communication campaigns, and support the development of in-house meeting coverage for the Secretariat's annual Open-ended Working Group meetings and annual Meetings of the Parties. The intern will also assist in the communication and outreach work of the team, gaining valuable experience in international environmental governance and communication strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the development of in-house meeting coverage for the Secretariat's annual Open-ended Working Group meetings and the annual Meetings of the Parties.
Assist in the development of global communication campaigns to mark World Ozone Day and the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment.
Provide communications, branding, and logistical assistance for meetings occurring during the internship period, including the Open-ended Working Group meeting in July and the Meeting of the Parties in November.
Research and develop content for communication materials related to ozone treaties.
Collaborate with team members to enhance outreach efforts and public engagement regarding ozone layer protection and related environmental issues.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in environmental sciences, communications studies, or a related field; (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in environmental sciences, communications studies, or a related field (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must be a student in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate school programme in environmental sciences, communications studies, or a related field. Alternatively, applicants can be in their final academic year of a first university degree programme in the same fields. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is necessary, and proof of enrollment or completion must be provided during the application process.
Experience: The internship does not require prior professional work experience. However, applicants should have a field of study that is closely related to the internship position they are applying for. This allows candidates to gain practical experience while contributing to the work of the Ozone Secretariat.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of French is also essential as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in Spanish is desirable, and knowledge of any other official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian) is considered an advantage.
