Job Overview:
The Population & Development Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting UNFPA’s Population and Development (P&D) portfolio. This position is designed for individuals who are looking to gain hands-on experience through structured coaching and on-the-job training under the supervision of an International Programme Analyst. The assistant will engage in various tasks that include data collection, analysis, and visualization related to population dynamics, fertility, youth, migration, and demographic trends. The role also involves assisting in the preparation of analytical briefs and reports, contributing to policy reviews, and supporting the integration of demographic data into UNFPA programs. The assistant will be expected to participate in capacity development initiatives and contribute to knowledge management efforts within the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Technical and Analytical Support: The assistant will support data collection, analysis, and visualization efforts related to population dynamics, fertility, youth, migration, and demographic trends. They will assist in preparing analytical briefs, presentations, and technical notes that align with UNFPA’s P&D priorities. Additionally, they will contribute to reviews of national policies, strategies, and plans related to population and development.
  • Programme and Planning Support: The role includes supporting the integration of population data and demographic analysis into UNFPA programs, Annual Work Plans (AWPs), Country Programme Documents (CPDs), and United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF)-related processes. The assistant will also assist in monitoring progress against P&D-related outputs and indicators and support reporting to donors and inter-agency coordination mechanisms as required.
  • Capacity Development and Learning: The assistant will participate in structured mentoring and coaching sessions led by the International UNV and engage in on-the-job learning through shadowing and joint assignments. They will also support the documentation of methodologies, tools, and lessons learned to strengthen institutional memory.
  • Coordination and Partnerships: The assistant will support coordination with national counterparts, UN agencies, and partners on P&D-related initiatives and assist in organizing technical meetings, workshops, and learning events.
  • Knowledge Management: The role includes contributing to maintaining organized repositories of P&D data, analyses, and technical resources, as well as supporting the dissemination of knowledge products and learning materials within the Country Office and with partners.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, particularly in data collection and interpretation related to population dynamics. They should demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in a challenging work environment. Creativity and professionalism are essential, along with the ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks. Strong communication skills are also required to facilitate coordination with various stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A degree in social sciences, demography, public health, or a related field is required. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in population studies or development will be given preference. Knowledge of UNFPA’s mission and objectives will be advantageous.

Experience:
The position is suitable for individuals who are at the beginning of their careers or those looking to transition into the field of population and development. Previous experience in data analysis, program support, or related fields is desirable but not mandatory. The role is designed to provide developmental opportunities for candidates to build their skills and competencies in population analysis and program support.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNFPA. Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable, given the local context and the need for effective communication with national counterparts and stakeholders. Additional languages may be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. National UN Volunteers in Yemen are part of a medical insurance plan and are entitled to a monthly living allowance of $1,385.92, a non-pensionable bonus of $364.50, and a well-being differential of $415.7
