Job Overview:
As a Protocol Officer at CERN, you will play a crucial role in coordinating visit and event programmes that allow high-level visitors to appreciate CERN's contributions to science and technology. This position places you at the forefront of the laboratory's representational functions, requiring close collaboration with colleagues across CERN and various scientific collaborations. You will be responsible for ensuring that all protocol and logistical arrangements are meticulously planned and executed, adhering to established guidelines while being adaptable to any last-minute changes. Your role will also involve advising CERN Management on protocol matters and contributing to the development of protocol-related policies and procedures, making it essential for you to have a strong understanding of diplomatic protocol and event management.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Chief of Protocol, your primary duties will include acting as the central contact point for designing and organizing visit and event programmes. You will coordinate with both external stakeholders and internal services to ensure seamless execution of events. Additionally, you will be responsible for managing protocol and logistical arrangements, ensuring compliance with relevant guidelines and timelines. Advising CERN Management and senior colleagues on protocol matters will be a key aspect of your role. You will also contribute to the collection of statistics and performance indicators for the Protocol Office, and support the ongoing development of protocol-related policies, guidelines, and procedures. This position may require you to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed by the organization.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, you must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Protocol, Hospitality, Communications, or a related field. You should have demonstrated experience in organizing and hosting diplomatic protocol events, and experience working in teams, preferably within an international environment or organization. Technical competencies required include a strong understanding of diplomatic and ceremonial protocol and etiquette, customer service skills, and event organization and management expertise. You should also be proficient in drafting and writing official documents for high-ranking officials or offices in both French and English, and be familiar with office software packages.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Protocol, Hospitality, Communications, or a related discipline. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of protocol and event management in an international context.

Experience:
The position requires demonstrated experience in organizing and hosting diplomatic protocol events. Candidates should have a background in working within teams, particularly in international environments or organizations, which will be beneficial for the collaborative nature of the role.

Languages:
Fluency in both spoken and written English and French is mandatory for this position. This bilingual requirement is crucial for effective communication and documentation in a diverse and international setting.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The role may involve working in radiation areas and during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this job is SR-SE-PRT-2026-50-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free and increases with relevant experience, along with 30 days of paid leave per year plus an additional two weeks of annual closure. There is also the possibility to extend the contract up to 8 years, with eligibility for indefinite contract tenure.
