Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. Founded in 1954, CERN employs thousands of physicists and engineers who work collaboratively to explore the basic constituents of matter using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments. The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking contributions to particle physics and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.

Job Overview:
The Mechanical Technician position is situated within the Infrastructure (IN) Section of the Site Asset Management (SAM) Group at CERN. The role primarily involves supporting HVAC, sanitary, and electrical activities through design, drafting, and calculation expertise. The successful candidate will engage in 3D design and technical drafting tasks, contributing to the development of infrastructure and facility projects. This position requires collaboration within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, where the technician will produce accurate technical documentation and models essential for the design and implementation of CERN's technical installations. The role emphasizes the importance of precision and technical proficiency in managing complex engineering tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Technician will be responsible for a variety of key tasks including:
  • Drafting: Creating, developing, and managing 2D/3D designs using REVIT and AUTOCAD for both existing and new HVAC, sanitary, and electrical installations.
  • Team Management and Technical Support: Organizing and overseeing design activities, monitoring progress, enhancing team skills, and providing technical support particularly in HVAC, sanitary, and electrical domains.
  • Project Design and Coordination: Leading project phases from feasibility to execution, coordinating with internal stakeholders and external consultants to ensure project success.
  • BIM Development: Ensuring that CAD/BIM tools (Revit, AutoCAD, IFC, etc.) are consistent, interoperable, and up to date, while supporting the evolution of standards and procedures in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Scans and Point Cloud Management: Producing, managing, and integrating 3D scans and point clouds into design processes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a technical certificate or general secondary education, or equivalent relevant experience in HVAC, sanitary, and electrical engineering design or a related field. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate extensive experience in the development and design of tertiary and industrial buildings, with proven proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD, and preferably knowledge of several 3D software applications. Experience in team management and working with 3D scans is also essential. A solid understanding of building construction, consolidation, and renovation, as well as design principles for HVAC/sanitary/electrical installations for industrial/civil buildings, is required. Knowledge of BIM management and proficiency in REVIT and AUTOCAD are critical, while familiarity with CATIA is considered a plus.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a technical certificate or general secondary education in a relevant field, such as HVAC, sanitary, or electrical engineering design. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience in these areas may also be considered. A strong foundation in engineering principles and practices related to building design and construction is essential for success in this role.

Experience:
The position requires extensive experience in the development and design of tertiary and industrial buildings. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with Revit and AutoCAD, as well as experience in team management and collaboration on engineering projects. Familiarity with 3D scans and point cloud technology is also necessary, indicating a well-rounded background in modern engineering practices.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being highly valued. This bilingual requirement reflects CERN's diverse and international working environment, where effective communication across languages is essential for collaboration and project success.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 3 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role involves working 40 hours per week and may require work in radiation areas. A valid driving license is also necessary. The job grade is classified as 3-4, and the reference for this position is SCE-SAM-IN-2025-153-LDB. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, increasing with relevant experience, along with 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks of annual closure.
