The intern will support the unit's mission to enhance participation and protect civic space, which is a critical aspect of the OHCHR's Management Plan. The intern will engage in various activities aimed at supporting Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), monitoring civic space trends, and mainstreaming civic space protection within the UN system. The role will involve working on strategic field engagement, developing monitoring frameworks, and building public support for HRDs, thereby contributing to the overall mission of the OHCHR to protect and promote human rights globally.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be involved in a range of duties including:
Assisting in mapping out protection practices for Human Rights Defenders and supporting pilot country projects.
Engaging with key actors to develop strategies for timely responses to threats against civic space.
Contributing to the development of a monitoring framework to track civic space trends and the situation of HRDs.
Supporting efforts to elevate civic space and protection work within the UN system by mapping policies and practices.
Assisting in initiatives aimed at increasing public visibility and understanding of the role of HRDs.
Collaborating with various stakeholders to share good practices and lessons learned in the field of human rights.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship, applicants must be recent graduates or currently enrolled in a graduate program (Master's degree or equivalent) or a first-level university degree program (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in fields such as law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or related areas. While professional work experience is not required, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in human rights and civic space issues. The ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and a commitment to the values of the United Nations are essential.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess either a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as law, political science, international relations, or social sciences.
