Job Overview:
The Geospatial Information Officer position is located within UNEP's Office of Science, specifically in the Strategy and Operations Section (SSOS). The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the quality assurance and validation of geospatial products, ensuring compliance with United Nations mapping rules and guidelines. This role involves managing geospatial data, conducting analyses, and providing visualizations to support environmental decision-making. The officer will also be tasked with creating operational dashboards and story maps for data visualization, as well as providing training and guidance to staff on geospatial technologies. The position requires a proactive approach to data management and the ability to work collaboratively with various teams to achieve organizational goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Geospatial Information Officer include:
  • Serving as the UNEP focal point for the review, quality assurance, and validation of all geospatial-related products, ensuring adherence to UN mapping rules.
  • Conducting geospatial data management, analysis, and visualization to provide early warning information for environmental decision-making.
  • Identifying and compiling relevant data on environmental themes using geospatial technologies.
  • Creating operational dashboards and story maps for interactive data visualization.
  • Performing GIS processing on UNEP projects and providing geospatial training to staff.
  • Drafting correspondence and communication materials related to geospatial data.
  • Leading recruitment and supervision of United Nations Volunteers (UNVs) and interns.
  • Assisting with data collection, analysis, and preparation of presentations and reports.
  • Updating information materials such as web pages or brochures. 1
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Relevant training in GIS Systems Administration is desirable. A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in geospatial information, analysis, mapping, data visualization, or related areas is required. Candidates with a first-level university degree may have the minimum experience requirement reduced by two years. Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), remote sensing tools, and spatial databases is essential. Experience with database programming languages (Python, SQL) and web GIS platforms is also required. Familiarity with data modeling and database management is desirable, along with at least one year of experience in data analytics or related areas.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. Relevant training in GIS Systems Administration is considered an asset. Candidates with a first-level university degree in a related field may be preferred, as it can reduce the required years of experience.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in geospatial information, analysis, mapping, data visualization, or related areas. This experience is crucial for understanding the complexities of geospatial data management and analysis.
