Job Overview: The UX/UI Designer position within the Business Computing (FAP-BC) group at CERN is a pivotal role focused on enhancing the usability and design of various applications that support the organization's operations. The selected candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive Design System that product teams can utilize to ensure consistency and quality across their applications. This role requires collaboration with UX colleagues to establish a governance model for the Design System, which will be presented to BC Management for approval. The designer will also engage in user-centered design practices, creating wireframes, prototypes, and user interfaces for both web-based and mobile applications. The position emphasizes the importance of user research and usability testing to gather feedback and iterate on designs, ensuring that the final products are intuitive and visually appealing. The UX/UI Designer will work closely with developers to implement designs effectively, maintaining design integrity throughout the development process.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UX/UI Designer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities that include:
Developing and maintaining UI design patterns, components, and style guides necessary for product teams, particularly in ongoing projects such as APT, Public Outreach, and EDH.
Collaborating with UX colleagues to propose and establish a governance model for the Design System, ensuring it meets the needs of all stakeholders.
Supporting the adoption of the Design System across various product teams to enhance consistency and usability.
Designing wireframes, prototypes, and user interfaces for web and mobile applications, ensuring they align with user-centered design principles.
Conducting user research and usability testing to gather feedback, which will inform design iterations and improvements.
Working closely with developers to implement designs, ensuring that the final products maintain the intended design integrity throughout the development lifecycle.
Documenting and presenting design work to stakeholders, facilitating discussions and feedback to refine design concepts.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the UX/UI Designer position must meet several qualifications, including:
A professional background in Design, Graphic Design, or a related field.
A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
Experience in designing end-to-end user interfaces, from initial concepts to validated designs.
Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Product Managers, Developers, and Business Analysts.
Familiarity with user research and usability testing methods to validate design decisions effectively.
Experience working within agile frameworks, incorporating early feedback from users and stakeholders into design deliverables.
Strong documentation and presentation skills to communicate design work to stakeholders effectively.
Educational Background: The educational background required for the UX/UI Designer position includes:
A Master's degree in Design, Graphic Design, or a related field, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience post-graduation.
Alternatively, candidates may hold a PhD in a related field, with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
Candidates must also be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
