Job Overview: The Consultant (Gender Safety Audit Workshops) will play a crucial role in implementing the 'Woman City' methodology in Juiz de Fora, Brazil. This position involves planning, coordinating, and facilitating participatory gender safety audit workshops with women and girls in a selected territory. The consultant will work closely with UN-Habitat's operational and technical teams to ensure the successful execution of the project, which aims to improve urban safety and promote gender perspectives in urban planning. The consultant will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive urban safety diagnosis, which includes practical recommendations based on the findings from the workshops. This role requires a deep understanding of gender-sensitive urban planning and the ability to engage effectively with community stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Consultant will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including: developing a detailed work plan that aligns with the project's schedule; learning and adapting the 'Woman City' methodology; creating supporting documents for participatory activities; organizing field trips for community engagement; facilitating workshops and discussions; maintaining an organized file system for data collection; assisting in the development of a georeferenced database; participating in key meetings; presenting findings to local partners; developing urban safety strategies based on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED); integrating gender perspectives throughout the project; ensuring continuous communication with UN-Habitat and stakeholders; and developing reports that meet UN-Habitat's quality standards. The consultant will also be required to complete necessary training and familiarize themselves with UN security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security protocols.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urbanism, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Public Policy, Urbanism, or related fields. A postgraduate degree in Social Science, Urban Planning, Geography, Public Policy, Gender Studies, or related fields is also required, or alternatively, four additional years of relevant experience beyond the basic requirement. Additional training in gender-sensitive urban planning or public safety policies is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and writing skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and familiarity with GIS software. Experience in participatory urban planning and community-based safety initiatives is essential, along with the ability to conduct workshops and engage stakeholders effectively.
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as Architecture and Urbanism, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Public Policy, or Urbanism is required. Additionally, a postgraduate degree in related fields is necessary, or candidates may substitute this with four years of relevant experience. This educational background ensures that the consultant has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively contribute to the project.
Experience: A minimum of six years of experience in participatory urban planning, urban safety, crime prevention, or gender-sensitive urban planning is required. Candidates should have a proven track record in facilitating participatory processes and conducting community-based research. Experience in data collection and qualitative and quantitative research methodologies is also essential. Familiarity with planning and working in informal settlements is considered an asset, as it aligns with the project's focus on inclusive urban development.
Languages: Fluency in Portuguese is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication in Brazil. Additionally, working knowledge of Spanish and English is desirable, as these languages are used within the United Nations Secretariat and the Regional Office. Proficiency in multiple languages will enhance the consultant's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and access a broader range of resources.
Additional Notes: The consultant will be appointed on a local basis, and only Brazilian nationals or candidates with a permanent visa in Brazil may apply. The contract is part-time (45%) for a duration of four months, with a total remuneration of BRL 17,500, distributed across three payment milestones based on the delivery of specific products. The consultant must be available for travel related to project activities, and all travel will be coordinated and financed by UN-Habitat according to United Nations guidelines.
