Job Overview:
The Non-Technical Survey (NTS) Operator position is crucial for the successful implementation of DRC's humanitarian mine action program, which was launched in June 202
  • This role involves conducting community-level surveys to assess the impact of explosive ordnance on various demographics, including women, girls, boys, and men in the affected areas. The NTS Operator will work closely with the NTS/EORE Team Lead to ensure that all activities are conducted in compliance with National Mine Action Standards and DRC’s Standard Operating Procedures. The position requires a proactive approach to gather and analyze data, engage with local communities, and support the overall objectives of the mine action program. The NTS Operator will also play a key role in reporting and documenting the outcomes of the surveys, contributing to the development of donor reports and case studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The NTS Operator will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Conducting assigned NTS activities in coordination with the NTS/EORE Team Lead, ensuring adherence to quality standards and compliance with established procedures.
  • Collecting and analyzing existing desktop and secondary data prior to conducting NTS tasks to inform survey activities.
  • Gathering geographic, socio-economic, and impact information on communities affected by explosive ordnance.
  • Supporting the implementation of pre and post-intervention surveys to evaluate the impact of DRC’s mine action activities.
  • Assisting the Team Lead in liaising with local representatives and stakeholders to facilitate project activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining a comprehensive information network with authorities, communities, NGOs, and other relevant sources.
  • Collaborating with EORE facilitators to share information and update procedures as necessary.
  • Completing daily, weekly, and monthly NTS reporting using standard templates and submitting them for verification.
  • Reporting any issues encountered during project implementation to the Project Manager and Team Lead. 1
  • Documenting success stories and lessons learned for inclusion in donor reports and case studies. 1
  • Performing any other duties as directed by the Line Manager.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the NTS Operator position should possess the following qualifications:
  • A vocational school education or higher education is considered an asset.
  • Previous training, qualifications, and experience in Non-Technical Survey (NTS) methodologies.
  • A sound understanding of topography, map drawing, and basic navigation skills using a compass and GPS.
  • Proficiency in using basic digital cameras for documentation purposes.
  • Experience working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is highly desirable.
  • Strong computer literacy and effective communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly in Tigrinya and English.
  • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team and a good understanding of local community dynamics.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes:
  • Completion of vocational school or higher education is an asset.
  • A high school diploma is required, along with specific NTS qualifications or certifications that demonstrate competency in the field.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 2 years of working experience in a related field, particularly in roles that involve community engagement, data collection, and survey methodologies. Experience in humanitarian settings, especially in remote and volatile areas, is highly valued. Candidates should be willing to work in challenging environments and demonstrate adaptability to changing circumstances.

Languages:
Fluency in Tigrinya is mandatory for this position, as it is essential for effective communication with local communities. Knowledge of the English language, both verbal and written, is considered an asset and will enhance the candidate's ability to engage with international teams and documentation processes.

This position is offered as a national contract with a duration of 4 months, starting on March 01, 202
  • The contract is classified under Band H2, which is a non-management designation. The salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for national employees.
