Job Overview: The position of Computing Engineer within CERN's IT Monitoring infrastructure is crucial for providing monitoring services to the CERN Datacenter and the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) as well as the CERN experimental communities. The infrastructure processes an impressive volume of over 100,000 log messages per second and manages more than 160 million active time series, along with over 200 billion stored documents. As a member of the Monitoring team, the successful candidate will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and evolving a diverse portfolio of monitoring solutions. This includes working with advanced technologies such as Grafana, OpenTelemetry, the Prometheus ecosystem, Apache Kafka, Kubernetes, and more. The role requires a proactive approach to support end-user requests, troubleshoot issues, and ensure the performance and availability of distributed systems, making it a vital position within the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include:
Operating and evolving the monitoring infrastructure, ensuring it meets the needs of the CERN community.
Supporting end-user requests for integration, problem-solving, and consulting on monitoring solutions.
Debugging and resolving performance or availability issues on distributed systems to ensure seamless operation.
Collaborating with team members and other departments to enhance monitoring capabilities and address user needs effectively.
Engaging in continuous learning and adapting to new technologies and methodologies in the field of IT monitoring.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
A maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computing Science or a related field.
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computing Science or a related discipline.
Experience operating and managing Kubernetes deployments of medium to large scale.
Familiarity with observability tooling such as FluentBit, OpenTelemetry collector, and Prometheus.
Proficiency in using GitOps tooling (e.g., ArgoCD) and infrastructure as code solutions like Terraform.
Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
A commitment to learning French, in addition to proficiency in spoken and written English.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computing Science or a related field. Candidates without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those with a PhD are also not eligible. This ensures that applicants have a solid foundation in the necessary technical skills and knowledge required for the role.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. This experience should be relevant to the field of computing and IT, particularly in areas related to monitoring infrastructure, Kubernetes management, and observability tooling.
