UNCTAD's mission is to support developing nations in their efforts to achieve economic stability and growth through trade and investment.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at UNCTAD is designed to provide valuable experience in the field of trade and economic development, particularly focusing on Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Interns will be expected to engage in a variety of tasks that contribute to the organization's mission, including drafting documents, attending meetings, and conducting research. This full-time internship, which can be undertaken either in-person in Geneva or remotely, is an opportunity for interns to gain insight into the workings of a major international organization while contributing to meaningful projects. Interns will receive training and mentoring throughout their tenure, ensuring they develop both professionally and personally. The internship is unpaid, and interns must cover their own expenses, including travel and accommodation if they choose the in-person option.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks that support the work of the Regional Advisory Programme of the Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes (ALDC). Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in drafting and preparing various documents such as project proposals, reports, policy analyses, and workshop presentations.
  • Attending online conferences and meetings, providing summaries and reports on discussions.
  • Supporting the preparation of project documents and training materials for conferences and events.
  • Participating in online office meetings and contributing to discussions.
  • Conducting research on trade and economic development issues affecting Least Developed Countries, including market access and trade policy.
  • Assisting in the evaluation and implementation of technical assistance projects.
  • Compiling statistics and databases, utilizing statistical tools to analyze data. Interns are expected to adhere to UN regulations and maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information. They must also respect the impartiality and independence of the UN, refraining from any conduct that could adversely affect the organization.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the internship, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, possess a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. A degree in economics, political science, development studies, or a related field is required. While professional work experience is not mandatory, a relevant field of study is essential.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a university degree in a relevant field such as economics, political science, development studies, or a related area. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of trade and economic development, particularly as they relate to Least Developed Countries. Applicants who are currently enrolled in a graduate program or have recently completed their studies are encouraged to apply, as the internship is designed to provide practical experience that complements academic learning.

Experience:
While prior professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, candidates should have a strong academic background in a field related to the internship. This could include coursework or projects that demonstrate an understanding of trade, economics, or international development. The internship is particularly suited for students or recent graduates looking to gain hands-on experience in a global organization and apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary working language of the United Nations. Knowledge of French is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application, given the multilingual environment of the UN. Proficiency in additional languages could also be beneficial, particularly in contexts involving international collaboration and communication.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of five days per week, totaling 40 hours. Interns must cover all costs related to travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses. For in-person internships, a valid visa is required. Remote interns must have access to a computer with the latest version of Office 365 applications and adhere to basic IT security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security practices. The internship is expected to last from 23 February 2026 to 22 May 2026, with no expectation of employment following the internship. Candidates should be aware that they are not eligible to apply for professional positions within the UN for six months after completing the internship.
