Job Overview: The Senegal Project Director, STRIDES is responsible for leading and directing the implementation of an anticipated Activity aimed at enhancing global health priorities in Senegal. This role encompasses the overall management of the project, including technical and financial responsibilities, personnel management, and budget oversight. The Project Director will serve as the primary liaison with local government and other global health security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security partners, ensuring effective collaboration and communication. The position requires the development and implementation of annual work plans, monitoring and evaluation activities, and comprehensive reporting. The Project Director will also be responsible for fostering a safe and equitable work environment, promoting a culture free from harassment and violence, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Senegal Project Director include planning, directing, and coordinating the implementation of the Activity to meet established goals and objectives within specified timeframes and funding parameters. This includes establishing work plans, teams, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with policies. The Project Director will directly manage technical, financial, and operational staff, ensuring the creation and maintenance of a safe work environment. They will manage relationships with national, regional, and local government counterparts and multisectoral partners to fulfill global health security objectives. The Project Director will also serve as the primary point of contact for in-country partners, lead the in-country team, and liaise with global leadership to define and adjust technical work plans and budgets. Additionally, they will ensure timely delivery of high-quality deliverables, provide guidance and training to staff, and support performance management and professional development.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess comprehensive knowledge of project management theories, concepts, and practices, with a strong preference for familiarity with international Global Health Security frameworks. Excellent project management skills are essential, including the ability to develop annual work plans and oversee monitoring and evaluation plans. Strong communication skills are required, along with the ability to influence and negotiate effectively. Experience in developing partnerships and managing relationships with government and implementing partners is highly preferred. Demonstrated leadership skills in managing staff within a matrixed organization are also necessary, along with critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree or its international equivalent in public health or a related health field is required, with a Master’s degree or its international equivalent preferred. Project management certification is also preferred, indicating a formal recognition of the candidate's project management skills and knowledge.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 10 years of relevant experience in project management principles and practices, including a minimum of 5 years in a managerial role. Proficiency with applicable Department of State or other donor rules and regulations is essential. Experience in managing human or animal health projects, particularly those related to infectious diseases, is highly desirable. Familiarity with Global Health Security projects and experience working across multiple sectors (One Health) is also beneficial. Demonstrated experience in mentoring staff and building local capacity is required, along with experience managing complex, multidisciplinary projects.
Languages: Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking) is mandatory, while fluency in French is also required. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with diverse stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position may require travel of 10-25% and is based in a typical office environment. Candidates should be prepared for the physical demands of the role, including the ability to spend long hours at a computer and perform repetitive tasks.
