Job Overview:
The Nutritionist position is crucial for supporting the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of public health nutrition programs in alignment with WHO norms and national priorities. This role involves applying evidence-based nutrition interventions, managing acute malnutrition, and providing clinical nutrition and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) services. The Nutritionist will also strengthen nutrition surveillance and data use for decision-making, coordinate with the Ministry of Health and partners, and ensure the quality and continuity of nutrition services, especially in emergency and fragile settings. The position requires a proactive approach to addressing public health nutrition challenges and contributing to the overall health goals of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage data collection and analysis, developing comprehensive plans to implement national programs, achieving results such as: - Communicating and following up with relevant Federal and State Ministry of Health units for data collection for the WHO Report. - Collaborating closely with state and field MoH and WHO officers to enhance timely reporting from all nutrition facilities and functional Stabilization Centers (SCs). - Supporting the establishment of IYCF reporting from nutrition facilities and SCs. - Sharing monthly Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) reports. - Overseeing Infant and Young Child Feeding activities, growth monitoring and promotion, and clinical nutrition and diet therapy. - Participating in planning WHO emergency and humanitarian nutrition activities at the country level.
  • Monitor and coordinate the implementation of planned activities, achieving results such as: - Supporting and coordinating joint nutrition activities with relevant nutrition partners. - Following WHO nutrition technical and financial reports. - Utilizing the food composition table for Sudan and developing local food recipes. - Ensuring the establishment of a center of excellence for SCs. - Monitoring the process of WHO nutrition supplies until they reach their required destinations. - Following the implementation of donor projects, including those from the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO).
  • Strengthen capacity building of nutrition interventions at various levels, achieving results such as: - Identifying training needs for target audiences and developing comprehensive capacity-building plans. - Organizing and delivering training activities to various target groups to improve case management and prevention. - Enhancing the capacity for prevention and management of nutrition interventions, including adherence to WHO's new guidelines.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in public health nutrition, with a focus on evidence-based interventions. They should have experience in managing nutrition programs, particularly in emergency settings. Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to the mission and values of WHO, including a focus on equity and inclusiveness in health.

Educational Background:
A degree in Nutrition, Public Health, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in public health nutrition or related disciplines are highly desirable. Continuous professional development in nutrition and public health is encouraged and may be beneficial for candidates.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in public health nutrition, particularly in program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Experience working in emergency settings or with international organizations is an advantage. Familiarity with WHO guidelines and standards in nutrition is also preferred.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of WHO. Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable, given the local context in Sudan. Additional languages may be beneficial but are not required.

Additional Notes:
This position is categorized as a National UN Specialist Volunteer role in Sudan, specifically in Port Sudan, which is classified as a Category E hardship duty station and a non-family duty station. The Rest and Recuperation (R&R) cycle for this location is 4 weeks, and movement of international staff is restricted to UN vehicles. The role requires a mature level of cultural awareness and the ability to work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions. WHO will arrange volunteer housing, and international UN Volunteers will receive a monthly living allowance to sustain a basic, adequate, and safe lifestyle, along with additional allowances for danger and hardship. This position is not a salaried role but rather a volunteer assignment aimed at contributing to public health efforts in Sudan.
