Job Overview: The Laboratory Technician position involves performing laboratory procedures as assigned by the laboratory supervisor, which includes pre-examination, examination, and post-examination activities using standard relevant equipment. The technician will contribute to the implementation of laboratory quality management systems and take on the role of focal point for quality system essentials as requested. The role requires strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the quality of laboratory procedures and compliance with biosafety measures. The technician will also be responsible for organizing and operating activities at assigned stations to ensure accurate and timely delivery of results, performing quality control and assurance activities, and facilitating laboratory equipment maintenance. Additionally, the technician will manage laboratory stock and alert the supervisor to any operational issues, while also participating in the improvement of laboratory services according to established work plans.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Technician include: performing laboratory procedures as assigned; contributing to the implementation of quality management systems; acting as the focal point for quality system essentials; ensuring compliance with SOPs; adhering to biosafety measures; organizing activities for timely delivery of results; performing quality control and assurance; facilitating equipment maintenance; managing laboratory stock; maintaining organized record keeping; developing or updating SOPs; participating in service system improvements; managing client expectations; ensuring compliance with IOM instructions; and undertaking any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Laboratory Technician position include a Bachelor’s degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Sciences, Microbiology, or a related discipline from an accredited institution, along with 3 years of professional experience. Alternatively, a Diploma in the same or related discipline with 5 years of professional experience is acceptable. A valid license to practice as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in Sri Lanka is also required. Candidates must have experience in clinical laboratory settings and knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and biosafety principles.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Sciences, Microbiology, or a related field from an accredited academic institution. In cases where the scope of responsibilities is fulfilled according to national regulations, a Diploma in the same or related discipline is acceptable, provided the candidate has the requisite professional experience. Accreditation of the educational institution must be verified through the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: Candidates should have clinical laboratory experience in a busy institution, preferably with a focus on laboratory techniques, quality management systems, and biosafety practices. Experience in data collection and analysis for laboratory monitoring and improvement is also essential. Proven laboratory expertise or an advanced degree in laboratory specialization is considered an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in English and Sinhalese or Tamil is required, with proficiency in all three languages being advantageous. This linguistic capability is essential for effective communication within the laboratory and with clients.
Additional Notes: The position is subject to local recruitment, and only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Sri Lanka will be considered. The appointment is contingent upon medical fitness certification, verification of residency, and compliance with government regulations. The selection process may be used to fill similar positions in various duty stations, and recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in similar roles for a period of 24 months.
