Job Posting Organization:
The Language and Communications Training Unit (LCTU) is part of the Capacity Development and Operational Training Services (CDOTS) within the Office of Support Operations (OSO) of the Department of Operational Support (DOS) at the United Nations. The LCTU is dedicated to promoting linguistic balance and multilingualism within the UN Secretariat, as mandated by various General Assembly resolutions. The organization focuses on improving the language abilities of staff members through structured language and communication skills courses. The LCTU operates at UN Headquarters in New York and extends its services to the Global Secretariat, ensuring that staff members have access to high-quality language education. The unit is committed to aligning its offerings with organizational goals and priorities, adhering to UN policies, and fulfilling the recommendations set forth by the Secretary-General regarding multilingualism. The LCTU employs a diverse team of language teachers who are responsible for the development, delivery, and assessment of language courses, and it regularly assesses the demand for additional part-time language instructors to meet the needs of its programs.

Job Overview:
The position of Part-Time Chinese Language Teacher involves preparing and facilitating lessons for assigned courses, correcting assignments and homework promptly, and monitoring students' progress. Teachers are expected to provide constructive feedback to both groups and individuals, administer evaluations, and grade tests and exams as scheduled. At the conclusion of each course, teachers must submit final evaluations and attendance reports for their students. The role also includes participation in the development of language or communication skills projects, with an emphasis on reporting progress and integrating feedback from supervisors to ensure high-quality deliverables. The teaching may occur in various formats, including in-person, online, or hybrid modalities, and the teacher will utilize Learning Management Systems and e-learning tools for course preparation and delivery. The contract duration is limited to a total of nine working months, regardless of the cumulative time worked, and the position may be based in New York or performed remotely, depending on the needs of the organization and the teacher's availability.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Part-Time Chinese Language Teacher include preparing and teaching Chinese language and communication skill courses at all levels, assessing student performance, and providing timely feedback. Teachers are responsible for administering courses through Learning Management Systems, maintaining attendance and grading records, and developing new courses and learning materials using innovative instructional technology. Additionally, teachers will design assessments and construct language proficiency exams according to established guidelines. The role requires a commitment to promoting multilingualism and enhancing the communication skills of UN staff in Chinese, ensuring that all teaching activities align with the organizational goals and the mandates of the General Assembly.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, education/pedagogy, or a related field. Degrees that emphasize the theory and practice of teaching a second or foreign language to adult learners are particularly desirable. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Post-degree training in second or foreign language teaching is highly desirable. Candidates should also have a minimum of five years of experience teaching Chinese as a foreign or second language to adults in a multicultural setting, with at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, and/or language teacher training. Familiarity with various e-learning tools and learning management systems is also important.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, or education/pedagogy. Candidates with a focus on teaching a second or foreign language to adult learners will be given preference. A first-level university degree may be accepted if accompanied by additional qualifying experience, and post-degree training in language teaching is highly desirable.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign or second language to adults, particularly in a multicultural environment. Candidates should have at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, and/or language teacher training. Experience using e-learning tools and learning management systems is also beneficial, as is experience in an international and multicultural setting.

Languages:
Expert-level proficiency in Chinese (both oral and written) is required, in accordance with the UN Language Framework. Advanced knowledge of English is also necessary, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of other UN official languages is considered desirable, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the organization.
