Job Overview: The Climate, Peace and advisor" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Advisor position is embedded within the Political Affairs Section of UNOAU and reports directly to the Chief of Section. The primary responsibility of the Advisor is to lead the organization's efforts in addressing the interlinkages between climate change, peace, and security in Africa. This includes conducting strategic analysis, providing policy advice, and fostering partnerships with relevant stakeholders, particularly within the African Union. The Advisor will be expected to promote the integration of climate considerations into the work of both UNOAU and the African Union Commission (AUC), thereby contributing to the implementation of the Joint AU-UN Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Security. The role requires a proactive approach to monitoring policy developments and enhancing cooperation on climate-related security risks, as well as supporting the AUC in designing policy initiatives that address emerging agendas related to climate security. The Advisor will also be responsible for knowledge management and dissemination of best practices in the field, ensuring that climate, peace, and security approaches are mainstreamed into policy frameworks and operational strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Climate, Peace and Security Advisor will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: providing strategic analysis and policy advice on climate change and its implications for peace and security; promoting the integration of climate considerations into UNOAU and AUC operations; monitoring and reporting on relevant policy developments; enhancing coordination between UNOAU and the African Union on climate-related security risks; serving as a technical focal point for climate, peace, and security issues; supporting the AUC in engaging member states and regional mechanisms; contributing to knowledge production and dissemination; identifying funding gaps and developing proposals for resource mobilization; collaborating with partners on climate finance advocacy; participating in relevant conferences and seminars; drafting analytical reports and other correspondence; and performing additional duties as required. The Advisor will also be responsible for collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and provide insights for decision-making.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's or Doctorate) in political sciences, international relations, conflict studies, political economy, climate, environment, or related fields. Alternatively, a first-level degree (Bachelor's) in the specified fields, combined with two additional years of relevant work experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. The position requires a strong understanding of climate, peace, and security issues, as well as the ability to analyze and interpret data effectively. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to gender perspectives and the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Candidates should have experience in political analysis, conflict resolution, and strategy development, as well as demonstrable experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice, and reporting. Experience working in an international organization or non-governmental organization is essential, and familiarity with the African Union and African sub-regional economic communities is desirable. Proven policy, advisory, and advocacy experience, along with a track record of engagement with senior officials in the UN or similar organizations, is also required.
Languages: English is the mandatory working language for this position, with a required proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is considered a desirable language, also requiring a proficiency level of UN Level II. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages, as they are essential for collaboration within the UN system and with external partners.
