It is the leading UN agency in the field of migration, dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. IOM works closely with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners to provide services and advice to governments and migrants. The organization has been operating in Papua New Guinea since 2001, focusing on complex emergencies and humanitarian relief while building the capacity of the Government for better migration management. IOM operates through its Country Office in Port Moresby and has 12 field offices across the country, with programs that address disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness and response, peacebuilding, labor mobility, human development, climate change, counter-trafficking, immigration and border governance, legal identity, protection, assisted voluntary return and reintegration, migration, and health.

Job Overview:
The internship-programme" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Internship Programme at IOM aims to attract talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM's programs and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. The program is designed to provide interns with practical experience in the field of migration and humanitarian work, allowing them to contribute to IOM's mission while gaining valuable skills and knowledge. Interns will work under the supervision of experienced professionals and will be involved in various tasks that support the organization's operations, particularly in finance and administration. This internship is an opportunity for individuals to enhance their understanding of migration issues and to develop their professional competencies in a dynamic international environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will assist in preparing online invoices for monthly payments, including utilities, consultant fees, staff salaries, and external services. They will provide clerical support to the finance office on its daily administrative and financial activities, ensuring the smooth running of finance functions in accordance with the Mission’s regulations and procedures. Responsibilities include preparing and posting accounting transactions, following up with relevant staff for missing documents, and providing general logistic support such as photocopying and scanning documents. Interns will also maintain an efficient filing and e-filing system for financial documentation, verify invoices and supporting documentation, assist with processing staff services such as travel and expense claims, and support the finance assistant team in completing all posted payments and accounting documents. Additionally, interns will help maintain accuracy in financial tracking and record-keeping, prepare financial reporting and monitoring for projects, assist in vendor maintenance, and handle petty cash accounts, ensuring compliance with IOM financial management rules and procedures.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Attention to detail and the ability to organize paperwork methodically are essential. Interns should be discreet, detail-oriented, client-focused, patient, and willing to learn new things. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required, along with good interpersonal communication and presentation skills. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to IOM's values of inclusion, integrity, professionalism, courage, and empathy.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, administration, or related fields from an accredited academic institution is required. Candidates should either be enrolled in the final academic year of their degree program or have graduated within the last 12 months.

Experience:
Interns should have less than two years of relevant working experience. While prior experience in finance-related areas is an advantage, it is not mandatory. The internship is designed for students and recent graduates, providing them with the opportunity to gain practical experience in the field.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Tok Pisin is required. IOM's official languages are English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may be evaluated during the selection process, which could include written and/or oral assessments.

Additional Notes:
The internship is subject to funding confirmation and medical fitness certification. Interns may receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs, but those receiving financial remuneration or credits from their university or sponsoring body will not be eligible for the stipend. IOM covers interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan, free of charge, for the duration of the assignment. However, interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses. IOM has a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with its aims and objectives, including discrimination and harassment.
