Job Posting Organization:
The position is associated with the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region, which was established to address the ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the surrounding areas. The PSC Framework, signed by 11 nations in February 2013 and later joined by Kenya and Sudan, serves as a foundation for their efforts to end cycles of violence and foster stability. The organization operates in multiple countries within the Great Lakes region, focusing on collaborative political processes and the implementation of commitments to address the root causes of conflict. The office is dedicated to coordinating efforts among various stakeholders to ensure effective resolution of conflicts and sustainable development in the region.

Job Overview:
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Project Management Officer in the Office of the Special Envoy. This role is crucial for supporting the implementation of data analytics strategies that enhance the efficiency and quality of data management within the organization. The intern will be involved in various tasks that include data collection, analysis, and the development of reports and dashboards that summarize findings for management. The position is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to data-driven decision-making processes, while also gaining valuable experience in the field of data analytics within an international organization. The expected duration of the internship is six months, starting from January 26, and the intern will be expected to engage in a range of activities that support the overall mission of the office.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics, and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
  • Analyze and interpret trends or patterns using statistical methods to identify relevant features and variables in structured data sources.
  • Develop process improvement mechanisms for data analytics tasks; acquire and clean data from primary or secondary sources and maintain databases/data systems.
  • Assist in the development of reports, dashboards, or other tools to effectively summarize findings and convey information to management.
  • Track and report on progress regarding department-specific data initiatives.
  • Create basic data visualization outputs to aid decision-making and communication of analysis outputs.
  • Contribute to project tasks, assist with data collection and initial analysis, and report unresolved issues to senior staff.
  • Produce data products like reports or newsletters related to data analysis activities.
  • Gather business requirements across departments to identify pain points and support data-driven analysis. 1
  • Compile and clarify data insights and develop supporting materials for stakeholder communications. 1
  • Stay updated on current and emerging trends in data analytics best practices, technologies, and tools. 1
  • Support the preparation and verification of data used in model assessments through data collection and preliminary analysis. 1
  • Assist in building the capacity of staff on data analytics, including conducting trainings for staff members and other personnel. 1
  • Participate in trainings and workshops on data analytics. 1
  • Support team members in data verification and routine reporting tasks, and help with administrative aspects of the work plan.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must be a student in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program. The position requires a strong foundation in data analytics and familiarity with statistical methods and tools. Candidates should demonstrate analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Additionally, proficiency in data management and visualization tools is highly desirable, as well as a proactive approach to problem-solving and a willingness to learn.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a background in fields related to data analytics, statistics, computer science, or a related discipline. A degree in these areas is preferred, and candidates should be able to demonstrate relevant coursework or projects that showcase their analytical skills and understanding of data management principles.

Experience:
While prior professional experience is not mandatory, any relevant internships, academic projects, or volunteer work that involves data analysis, statistical methods, or related tasks will be considered an asset. The internship is designed for individuals who are in the final stages of their academic programs or have recently graduated, providing them with an opportunity to gain practical experience in a professional setting.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, such as French, is desirable and will enhance the candidate's profile. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and understanding, while knowledge is defined as 'confident' in two of the four areas.
