Job Overview:
The Language Intern position at the United Nations is designed for individuals who are passionate about the UN's mission and are eager to gain practical experience in a dynamic international environment. The intern will work under the guidance of the Chief of the Unit and the UN Web TV website Language manager, contributing to the daily live and on-demand streaming of UN meetings and events. This role involves training on a cloud video platform to upload videos and relevant metadata for the UN Web TV website, as well as assisting with streaming on social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. The intern will have the opportunity to engage with various aspects of media production and communication within a global context, enhancing their understanding of the UN's operations and outreach efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Language Intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Assisting in the daily live and on-demand streaming of United Nations meetings and events through the UN Web TV platform.
  • Uploading videos and relevant language metadata to the UN Web TV website using a cloud video platform.
  • Supporting the live and on-demand streaming on social media accounts, including the UN YouTube channel, Facebook (UNWebTV), and Twitter (UNWebTV).
  • Collaborating with the Language manager and other team members to ensure high-quality content delivery.
  • Engaging in additional tasks as assigned by the Chief of the Unit, which may include drafting news articles, creating social media posts, and designing surveys or polls.
  • Maintaining a professional demeanor while interacting with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in standard word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Exhibit a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Show the ability to successfully interact with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating tolerance and understanding of differing opinions and views.
  • Have good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable, as well as the ability to design surveys and polls.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program. This educational background should be closely related to the type of internship being applied for, ensuring that candidates possess relevant knowledge and skills applicable to the role.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, applicants should have a field of study that closely relates to the internship position. This allows candidates to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and gain valuable insights into the workings of the United Nations and its communication strategies.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
