Job Overview: The position of Senior Counsel at the World Bank Group is a critical role within the Legal Vice Presidency (LEG), which provides legal advice and support to various internal and external clients on a wide range of operational, advisory, financial, administrative, and institutional matters. The Senior Counsel will be part of the Institutional Administration Practice Group, which serves the legal needs of the World Bank Group, including its Regional Vice Presidencies and various departments. The role requires a lawyer who can operate independently while also collaborating with other legal professionals within the organization. The Senior Counsel will be responsible for handling legal and policy issues related to the Bank's work, ensuring compliance with international laws and regulations, and providing strategic legal advice to support the Bank's development objectives. Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Counsel will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: serving as a lawyer in the Institutional Administration Practice Group, providing legal advice and services to various departments within the World Bank Group; independently drafting and revising pleadings and submissions to the Bank’s Administrative Tribunal; managing national court litigation and commercial arbitration; reviewing corporate procurement contracts in light of international organization immunities; maintaining strong client relations by resolving differences and understanding the needs of various stakeholders; handling a variety of projects related to transactions, policy issues, and miscellaneous matters as requested by the Deputy General Counsel; and performing ad hoc assignments as necessary. The Senior Counsel will also be expected to demonstrate professionalism, tact, and diplomacy in all interactions, fostering consensus among diverse parties.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an LLM degree, J.D., or equivalent legal qualification, along with a minimum of eight years of relevant experience in legal practice. Admission to the Bar (or equivalent) in at least one jurisdiction is required. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to work collaboratively, build trust among colleagues, and respond effectively to key legal issues. Additional certifications or training in specialized legal fields may be advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of eight years of relevant legal experience, which may include work in international law, public policy, corporate law, or litigation. Experience in managing complex legal issues, particularly in an international context, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the operations of international organizations and the legal frameworks governing them will be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and oral, is mandatory for this position. Additionally, proficiency in one or more of the following languages is preferred: French, Spanish, or Portuguese.
