Job Overview: The consultant will provide technical support to the UN-Habitat Jordan head of Country office, project managers, and the project team to deliver essential technical outputs. This includes implementing project outputs and activities under the guidance of the head of the Country office and project managers, supporting the finalization of project-related reports and documents, and enhancing the capacities of local and national stakeholders. The consultant will be involved in collecting and analyzing data to prioritize interventions, ensuring that the projects align with the strategic goals of UN-Habitat, particularly in addressing climate change and urban resilience. The role is home-based and expected to last for five months, focusing on various projects aimed at improving urban environments and socio-economic conditions for vulnerable populations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will support the UN-Habitat Jordan head of Country office and project managers in several key projects, including RISE UP, Rethinking Sahab, Green Al Salt, and Sport for Sustainable Urban Development. Responsibilities include providing technical advice for evidence-based urban programming, leading the collection, analysis, and visualization of spatial and non-spatial data, and developing urban indicators. The consultant will also be responsible for capacity-building sessions for staff and stakeholders on spatial analysis tools, data cleaning methods, and analytical frameworks. Additionally, the consultant will compile spatial datasets into a comprehensive package for local partners and ensure adherence to the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity as a UN representative.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Cartography, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or a related field. A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in urban development and planning, graphic design, GIS integration, and reporting is required. The ability to write technical reports, concept notes, and project documents is essential. Knowledge of GIS design and development, geodatabase management, and software programming languages is desirable. Candidates should also have experience in dealing with urban data, facilitating capacity-building processes, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Sound judgment, analytical skills, and the ability to organize workshops are also important.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's Degree in Cartography, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or a related field is required for this position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the technical aspects of urban planning and development, as well as for effectively utilizing GIS tools and methodologies in the projects.
Experience: The position requires at least 2 years of relevant work experience in urban development and planning, graphic design, and geographic information systems integration. Candidates should have direct proven experience in the local context, which is essential for understanding the specific challenges and opportunities within Jordan's urban landscape. Experience with international development organizations is also desirable, as it provides insight into collaborative approaches and best practices in urban development.
Languages: Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN, but not mandatory for this role.
Additional Notes: The position is home-based and expected to last for five months. The consultant will work under the overall supervision of the UN-Habitat Jordan head of Country office and project managers.
