Job Overview: The Public Health Officer will play a crucial role in managing and coordinating public health activities, particularly in emergency situations. Reporting directly to the Health Emergency Officer, the incumbent is expected to perform their duties with a high degree of efficiency and sound judgment. This position involves overseeing data collection and analysis, managing capacity-building initiatives for health personnel, and ensuring that public health assistance aligns with international standards and local priorities. The officer will also be responsible for developing health information dashboards and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance health systems. The role is vital in identifying health threats and addressing them effectively, especially in crisis situations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Public Health Officer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Managing data collection and analysis, which involves securing information from various health sectors, analyzing data, and recommending actions based on findings. This includes coordinating teams to maintain and improve public health surveillance systems and registries, designing and implementing assessments relevant to displaced populations, and producing qualitative and quantitative reports based on WHO indicators.
Leading capacity-building initiatives for health personnel, which entails identifying training needs, developing tailored training materials, and delivering capacity-building activities in health facilities and camps. The officer will also conduct follow-ups and impact analyses on training workshops.
Monitoring and coordinating the implementation of planned activities and national campaigns, ensuring that public health assistance is in line with international priorities. This includes identifying priority health issues, planning interventions, and providing technical guidance during emergencies.
Liaising with local partners to secure data collection, review technical reports, and coordinate implementation activities, thereby ensuring that public health assistance meets both international standards and local needs.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in medicine, with post-graduate studies in public health or a related field being desirable. Essential qualifications include at least two years of experience in health sectorcoordination at either the national or international level, along with demonstrated knowledge of health sector activities in emergency response contexts. Experience in capacity building is also essential, while experience with WHO, UN organizations, international institutions, or NGOs is considered desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a first-level university degree in medicine. Candidates with post-graduate studies in public health or related fields will have an advantage. It is crucial that candidates provide proof of their educational qualifications, as WHO only recognizes degrees from accredited institutions listed in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of professional experience in health sector coordination, either at the national or international level. Candidates should have experience in capacity building and a solid understanding of health sector activities, particularly in the context of emergency response and relief efforts. Experience working with WHO or other UN organizations, as well as international institutions or NGOs, is highly desirable and will strengthen a candidate's application.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Arabic is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but the primary requirement is strong communication skills in these two languages to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders and communities.
