Job Overview:
The Communications Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the operational implementation of UNICEF's media and content strategy. This position is primarily focused on enhancing technical engagement with various media platforms, including traditional and digital media, at local, regional, national, and international levels. The Assistant is responsible for producing engaging journalistic content tailored for different media outlets while ensuring that all dissemination and advocacy efforts are grounded in a rights-based, intercultural, and global approach. The role significantly contributes to strengthening UNICEF's visibility and advocacy for children's rights, thereby enhancing the organization's overall impact and resource mobilization efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Media Relations Support: Act as a contact point for journalists and maintain updated media contact lists. Monitor media for relevant news and trends.
  • Content Drafting and Dissemination Support: Draft press releases and human-interest stories, ensuring adherence to UNICEF's branding and communication standards.
  • Support to Spokesperson Preparation: Prepare talking points and Q&A documents for spokespeople and assist in media training sessions.
  • Emergency Communication Support: Coordinate information flows during emergencies and assist in the dissemination of information.
  • Support to Visibility and Advocacy Campaigns: Assist in implementing communication and advocacy activities.
  • Content and Materials Management: Organize and archive communication materials.
  • Media Monitoring and Reporting: Monitor media and report relevant information related to UNICEF’s mandate.
  • Administrative and Logistical Support: Assist in preparing documentation for communication activities and organizing press events.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of secondary education is required, with university-level coursework in Communication, Journalism, or related fields considered an asset. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field may replace three years of related work experience, while a master’s degree may replace an additional two years.

Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree from a recognized academic institution in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or related fields is preferred. Secondary education is the minimum requirement, with higher education providing a competitive advantage.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in writing and media relations is required. Experience with international organizations is considered an asset. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree may have some experience requirements waived.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish is required, with intermediate knowledge of English preferred for liaising with international media. Knowledge of local languages such as Quechua or Aymara is considered an asset.
