Established to promote the value and recognition of volunteerism, UNV operates under the administration of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and reports to the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board. The organization works with various partners to integrate qualified and motivated UN Volunteers into development programming, ensuring that their contributions are meaningful and impactful. UNV Field Units engage with UN entities at the country level to strategically incorporate volunteerism into the implementation of their mandates, identifying unique opportunities where volunteers can add value to development programs and peacekeeping missions. UNV's mission is to enhance the effectiveness of development efforts through volunteerism, fostering partnerships that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Job Overview: This Online Volunteer (OV) assignment is part of the UNV Pakistan Country Office's initiative to enhance equitable access to information and opportunities by optimizing and updating the volunteer onboarding process. The primary focus of this role is to translate and proofread materials from English into local languages, specifically Sindhi, Pashto, and Urdu. By doing so, the OVs will help eliminate language barriers and improve access to essential information, thereby supporting SDG 17, which emphasizes partnerships for the goals. The OVs will ensure that candidates fully comprehend the requirements and expectations associated with the UN Volunteer onboarding processes. This role is crucial in facilitating effective communication and data dissemination, ensuring that all volunteers can engage with the onboarding materials in their preferred language. The OVs will work remotely and will not be stationed at any UN duty station or field office, allowing for flexibility and accessibility in their contributions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Volunteers will be responsible for translating and proofreading English content related to the UNV onboarding process. Their duties will include:
Translating instructional statements and materials from English into the specified local languages (Sindhi, Pashto, and Urdu) while ensuring accuracy and consistency in terminology, tone, and style.
Proofreading translations to ensure fluency and readability in the target language, making necessary adjustments to enhance clarity and comprehension.
Conducting thorough quality checks on all translated materials to maintain high standards of accuracy and professionalism.
Collaborating with other OVs to distribute translation work evenly and efficiently among team members.
Communicating language preferences in the motivation statement during the application process.
Participating in orientation sessions and ongoing guidance throughout the assignment to ensure alignment with UNV standards and expectations.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong language skills in both English and the target languages (Sindhi, Pashto, and Urdu). They should demonstrate proficiency in translation and proofreading, with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work. Familiarity with UNV processes and terminology is advantageous but not mandatory. Additionally, candidates should exhibit strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a remote team environment. A proactive approach to problem-solving and a willingness to seek clarification when needed are essential for success in this role.
Educational Background: While specific educational qualifications are not explicitly stated, candidates are generally expected to have a background in languages, translation, linguistics, or a related field. Relevant coursework or certifications in translation and proofreading may enhance a candidate's application. A strong command of the local languages and English is crucial for effective communication and translation.
Experience: Previous experience in translation and proofreading is highly desirable. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to produce accurate and high-quality translations, preferably in a professional or volunteer capacity. Experience working with international organizations or in multicultural environments can be beneficial, as it may provide insight into the nuances of language and communication within diverse contexts.
Languages: Mandatory languages for this position include English and the local languages of Sindhi, Pashto, and Urdu. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective translation and proofreading. Additional languages may be considered an asset, but the primary focus will be on the specified languages to ensure comprehensive coverage across Pakistan.
Additional Notes: This position is remote, allowing for flexibility in work hours and location. The assignment does not specify a contract duration, but candidates should be prepared to commit to the duration of the onboarding process as required. The role is designed for individuals who are passionate about volunteerism and eager to contribute to the UNV mission. Selected Online Volunteers will receive guidance and support throughout their assignment, ensuring they have the resources needed to succeed in their roles.
