The Assistant Field Translator will also be responsible for maintaining a high level of professionalism and integrity in their work, ensuring that all translations adhere to established terminology and style guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Field Translator will be responsible for the following duties:
Translate and interpret a variety of texts from local languages to designated UN working languages, ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
Assist in matters of terminology and style to maintain uniformity and quality across translations.
Resolve translation and editorial issues through consultation with authors and other stakeholders.
Support the unit's efforts to achieve high standards of accuracy, consistency, and fidelity to the original text.
Conduct research and utilize reference materials to enhance the quality of translations.
Maintain a consistent output speed while ensuring the quality of work is not compromised.
Identify new terminology materials for consideration by revisers and terminology managers.
Perform other related duties as required by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong writing skills and demonstrate a high standard of accuracy and consistency in their translations. A good grasp of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations is essential, including political, social, legal, economic, and technical fields. The ability to work under pressure and maintain a high volume of output while delivering clear interpretations is crucial. Candidates should also exhibit professionalism, judgment, and discretion in their work, showing pride in their achievements and a commitment to meeting deadlines and organizational needs. A strong client orientation is necessary, with the ability to establish productive partnerships and respond effectively to clients' needs.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in translation, interpretation, languages, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the aforementioned fields, combined with two additional years of relevant work experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: For candidates holding a first-level university degree, a minimum of two years of experience in translation and/or interpretation is required. Candidates with an advanced university degree do not require prior experience. Experience within the United Nations system, similar international organizations, or international NGOs is desirable, as is experience in the humanitarian sector and providing interpretation for national or international events.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in English is required, along with fluency in Ukrainian and Russian. Candidates must demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in these languages, as per the UN Language Framework standards.
