Interns will gain hands-on experience in various operational activities, contributing to the European Migration Network (EMN) and supporting the Policy Research and Migration Law Unit. The role will involve assisting with research, event management, and administrative tasks, providing a comprehensive understanding of the organization's work in migration policy and law.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Providing administrative support in the planning, organization, and implementation of events related to the European Migration Network (EMN).
Conducting research work for the Policy Research and Migration Law Unit, including desk research and literature reviews.
Translating texts between German and English as needed.
Collecting information on relevant publications, stakeholders, and legal information.
Attending meetings, seminars, and workshops, taking notes for the file when attendance is free of charge.
Performing any other tasks assigned by the supervisor. The intern's contributions will be crucial in supporting the objectives of the EMN and enhancing the understanding of migration and asylum issues in Austria and the EU.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
A specific interest in migration and asylum governance, demonstrated through academic studies or relevant experience.
Enrollment in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level) or graduation within the last 12 months.
Aged between 20 and 36 years.
Proven experience in research and excellent writing skills.
Strong social and intercultural skills, along with excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
Affinity for IT and competent handling of virtual events is an asset.
Work experience with an international organization is a plus.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes a minimum Bachelor Level Degree in fields such as Political Science, International Relations, Migration Studies, Law, Social Science, or related disciplines. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of migration policies and the legal frameworks that govern them.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have less than two years of relevant working experience. This is particularly aimed at students and recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in the field of migration and asylum policy. Previous internships or volunteer work in related areas will be advantageous but are not mandatory.
Languages: The intern must have an excellent oral and written command of both German and English. Proficiency in these languages will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly IOM's official languages such as French and Spanish, would be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: The internship is subject to funding confirmation and will require certification of medical fitness for appointment, verification of residency, visa, and necessary authorizations by the concerned government, where applicable. Interns may receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs, but those already receiving financial remuneration or credits from their university or other sponsoring bodies will not be eligible for this stipend. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan for the duration of the assignment, but interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses. IOM has a zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and IOM, including discrimination and harassment.
