Job Overview:
The position of Electronics Engineer within the Fibre Optics Section of the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) at CERN involves active participation in the design, preparation, supervision, and validation of optical fibre installations. The role is crucial for the management and operation of CERN's optical fibre network, which connects various buildings, accelerators, and particle detectors. The successful candidate will work on significant projects such as the HL-LHC project and the Personnel Safety System Consolidation (PSS-CONS) program. The role requires establishing installation requirements, preparing technical documentation, managing contractors, and ensuring the quality of work performed. The candidate will also be responsible for organizing maintenance and repair activities, preparing progress reports, and conducting studies on infrastructure upgrades. This position offers an opportunity to gain knowledge in optical fibre infrastructure and installation techniques while working closely with a team of professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Establish installation requirements for optical fibres.
  • Prepare database registration and technical work files for contractors.
  • Contribute to drafting work planning and follow up with contractors.
  • Organize and manage worksite meetings.
  • Verify the quality of work performed by contractors and validate optical fibre installations.
  • Organize and execute fibre patching and optical measurements as required.
  • Organize maintenance and repair activities when necessary.
  • Prepare work progress reports.
  • Carry out studies on infrastructure consolidation and upgrades. 1
  • Support and integrate effectively with the Section Team to ensure smooth daily operations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and possess a professional background in Electronics, Electrical, Telecom, or a related field. They should have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Telecom, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a PhD in a relevant discipline is acceptable, provided the candidate has limited post-graduation experience. The educational background should include a strong foundation in technical documentation and project management.

Experience:
Candidates should have a proven ability in drawing up technical documentation and experience in preparing work files, supervising work, and accepting cabling installations. Experience in cable installation is considered an asset. The role requires the ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be beneficial but is not required.

The contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The position requires full-time commitment with 40 working hours per week. The target start date is February 1, 202
  • The role involves working in radiation areas and underground installations, and candidates must reside in the immediate vicinity of CERN's installations. A valid driving license is required, and the position may involve night shifts, work on Sundays, and official holidays as needed. Candidates must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position. The compensation includes a monthly stipend between 6287-6911 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance, family allowances, a relocation package, and opportunities for on-the-job training and language classes.
