Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. Founded in 1954, CERN employs thousands of physicists and engineers who work collaboratively to explore the basic constituents of matter using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments. The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking research in particle physics, contributing significantly to our understanding of the universe's fundamental laws.

Job Overview:
The position of Technician for Water Treatment Systems within CERN's Engineering Department (EN) is crucial for the operation and maintenance of the water treatment systems that support CERN’s accelerator complex and experimental areas. The role involves working within the Cooling and Ventilation (CV) group, specifically in the Water Management and Consolidation Section. The technician will be responsible for supervising installation work, commissioning new systems, upgrading existing systems, and consolidating older systems. This position requires a qualified technician with expertise in water treatment systems, including reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and softeners. The technician will contribute to the operation and maintenance of complex cooling plants, ensuring that they function effectively in a unique and challenging environment that hosts some of the world's most advanced technical installations. The role also includes planning, coordinating, and performing preventive and corrective maintenance activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and maintaining technical documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Technician for Water Treatment Systems, your duties will include: planning and coordinating maintenance activities using the CMMS system; performing operational activities to ensure the proper functioning of water treatment systems; liaising with users regarding equipment under your responsibility; proposing solutions for modifications or renovations; coordinating contractors’ maintenance and installation work; contributing to projects from design to commissioning; ensuring technical documentation is up-to-date; adhering to safety rules during interventions; participating in stand-by services for cooling and ventilation systems; and regularly reporting on activity progress, issues, schedules, and costs.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a technical certificate or general secondary education in Electrical, Electro-mechanical, Mechanical Technician, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have experience in maintenance, operation, and installation of water treatment systems, technical coordination of external contractors, and familiarity with CMMS tools. Experience with low-voltage electrical systems and water treatment of cooling circuits is essential, while experience in operating and maintaining compressed air systems and electrical CAD design is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a technical certificate or equivalent relevant experience in a related field such as Electrical, Electro-mechanical, or Mechanical Technician. This foundational education is critical for understanding the complexities of water treatment systems and their integration into larger cooling and ventilation systems.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in the maintenance, operation, and installation of water treatment systems. This includes technical coordination of external contractors and the use of CMMS tools. Experience with low-voltage electrical systems and water treatment processes for cooling circuits is essential, while additional experience in compressed air systems and electrical CAD design would be advantageous.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being a requirement. This bilingual capability is essential for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position under certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role is fully onsite. The position involves participation in regular stand-by duties, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays, as well as work in radiation areas and underground installations. Candidates must possess a valid driving license and may be required to work shifts based on organizational needs. Due to occupational health risks, selected candidates must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The job grade is classified as 3-4, and the reference for this position is EN-CV-WMC-2025-211-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
