Job Posting Organization:
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is a regional organization established to support economic and social development in its 22 Arab member States. Job Overview:
The Economic Affairs Assistant will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality statistical and analytical support to the ESCWA project, particularly in relation to the development and implementation of the Governorate Competitiveness Index (GCI) in Oman. This position requires the incumbent to ensure that all work meets ESCWA's standards for accuracy, clarity, and relevance. The role involves contributing to the production of analytical reports, policy briefs, and technical outputs that support evidence-based policymaking and promote balanced development across Oman’s governorates. The Economic Affairs Assistant will be evaluated based on the timely completion of tasks, the quality of data analysis, and the effectiveness of communication with team members and supervisors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Economic Affairs Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator. Key duties include:
  • Data Processing: Supporting the validation, cleaning, and organization of datasets; maintaining and updating indicator databases; and processing both quantitative and qualitative data using analytical software.
  • Research and Statistical Analysis: Conducting statistical analyses to identify trends and insights, interpreting results, and preparing visual outputs such as graphs and dashboards.
  • Knowledge Product Development: Assisting in drafting technical materials, policy briefs, and reports that contribute to the project’s objectives.
  • Coordination and Support: Organizing meetings and consultations, ensuring coherence and accuracy of outputs, and performing other related tasks as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field. It is essential that all applicants submit a copy of their educational degree, as incomplete applications will not be considered. While no previous work experience is required for this position, exposure to indices or governance monitoring tools, as well as familiarity with data visualization software or statistical packages, is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of data analysis and statistics.

Educational Background:
A first-level university degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate possesses the necessary analytical skills and knowledge to perform the duties effectively.

Experience:
This position does not require any previous work experience, making it suitable for recent graduates or individuals looking to enter the field of economic and social development. However, any exposure to indices or governance monitoring tools, as well as familiarity with data visualization software or statistical packages, will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, as these are the working languages of ESCWA. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in all four areas of language use: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. While French is also a working language of the United Nations Secretariat, fluency in Arabic and English is mandatory for this role.
