Job Overview: As an Electrical Technician in the Cabling Section at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the expansion, strengthening, and maintenance of CERN's control and power cable installations. This position is vital for supporting essential systems within CERN's accelerators, including alarm systems, process control systems, beam instrumentation, and magnet powering systems. Your responsibilities will include analyzing cable installation requests, conducting necessary studies to define cable types and routing, creating bills of quantities and budgets, and organizing cabling campaigns. You will also ensure the preparation of detailed work documentation, carry out risk assessments, manage logistics for cabling activities, and monitor the progress and quality of work. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and effective communication with various stakeholders to ensure safety and compliance with CERN standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Analyze cable installation requests and liaise with requesters to gather any missing information.
Conduct studies to define cable types, connectors assembly, wire conventions, routing, and mechanical supports in collaboration with users.
Create bills of quantities and budgets for cabling projects.
Organize cabling and de-cabling campaigns, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors and transport services.
Prepare detailed work documentation, including drawings, cable lists, connector assembly procedures, and test procedures.
Carry out risk assessments related to cabling work, identifying potential hazards and defining mitigation measures.
Manage logistics for cabling activities, including material delivery, scaffolding setup, and site access.
Organize and manage worksite meetings to ensure effective communication and coordination.
Monitor and report on the progress, safety, and quality of cabling works. 1
Perform inspections, testing, and acceptance of completed work to ensure compliance with standards.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a technical certificate or general secondary education, or equivalent relevant experience in Industrial Electrical Installation or a related field. Demonstrated experience in planning, preparing, and overseeing industrial electrical cabling activities is essential, including familiarity with lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. Strong experience with control and power cables and their connectors is required, along with experience in verifying the technical quality and compliance of cabling installations with applicable standards and specifications. Experience in technical supervision of contractors is also necessary.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a technical certificate or general secondary education in a relevant field, such as Industrial Electrical Installation. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. A strong foundation in electrical engineering principles and practices is essential for success in this role.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in the field of industrial electrical cabling, particularly in planning and overseeing cabling activities. Experience with control and power cables, as well as technical supervision of contractors, is highly valued. Familiarity with safety standards and compliance regulations in electrical installations is also important.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being a requirement. This bilingual capability is essential for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The role requires a commitment to a 40-hour work week, with hybrid job flexibility. Candidates should be prepared for work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and may need to work shifts, stand-by duty, and during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required.
