Job Overview: The Managing Director (MD) for SME Finance & Development is a pivotal leadership role within the EBRD, responsible for setting the strategic direction and frameworks necessary to provide comprehensive business advisory services to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups. This position requires collaboration and coordination with various teams within the Client Services Group (CSG), including Financial Institutions, Corporate Sector, Climate Strategy & Delivery, and Policy Strategy & Delivery. The MD will ensure an integrated approach to delivering the EBRD SME Offer, which includes implementing innovative financial products and fostering best practices in SME advisory services. The role is expected to drive significant impact through the design and delivery of special financial products, such as risk-sharing facilities and sustainable supply chain financing, while also advancing non-financial solutions through partnerships. The MD will be accountable for the overall performance of the SME Finance & Development Group, which has a substantial track record of delivering advisory projects and training events to SMEs across the EBRD's countries of operation.
Duties and Responsibilities: The MD will lead the design of the EBRD SME Offer in collaboration with CSG delivery groups, preparing comprehensive delivery reports for the Board. Responsibilities include adapting the Group’s products to the specific context of each Country of Operation (COO), managing the delivery of special financial products, and ensuring synergy with other delivery groups. The MD will set the Group’s scorecard in alignment with Banking scorecards, manage donor resources for SME support, and represent the Bank in high-level business and institutional relationships. Additionally, the MD will be accountable for the Group’s management, including budget allocation, resource coordination, staff recruitment, performance management, and fostering a culture of integrity and ethical conduct within the team. The role also involves contributing to the Bank's Transformation Agenda and ensuring compliance with operational risk requirements.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess extensive relevant international experience, ideally within a major commercial or development bank, with significant exposure to the EBRD region. A high level of banking skills and expertise in developing, structuring, negotiating, and monitoring investment transactions, particularly with SMEs, is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strategic thinking abilities, a proven track record of operational success at the Director level or equivalent, and experience in leading and developing high-performing teams. Strong partnership skills are necessary to engage effectively with senior management and contribute to the cohesiveness of the Bank's leadership.
Educational Background: A relevant academic background is required, with a combination of academic and professional qualifications that align with the responsibilities of the role. This may include advanced degrees in finance, business administration, economics, or related fields that provide a solid foundation for understanding the complexities of SME finance and development.
Experience: The position requires a significant level of experience, with a focus on international banking and development finance. Candidates should have a proven record of accomplishment in managing large teams and resources in a matrix environment, demonstrating the ability to lead initiatives that drive business success and foster collaboration across various sectors.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the EBRD. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the EBRD's countries of operation would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and clients.
Additional Notes: This position is a fixed-term contract for a duration of 4 years, with the potential for renewal for an additional maximum of 4 years.
