Established with the mission to create lasting change through volunteering, VSO operates in some of the world’s poorest and most fragile regions. The organization believes in empowering local communities by working alongside volunteers and partners rather than merely providing aid. VSO's approach, known as Volunteering for Development (VfD), prioritizes the most marginalized individuals, fostering active citizenship and sustainable development that endures beyond the lifespan of projects or grants. VSO has a global presence, engaging volunteers from various backgrounds to contribute to community-led change.
Job Overview: The role focuses on strengthening the capacity of Civil Society Groups (CSGs) in Uganda, particularly in Kalangala, by co-developing inclusive tools, frameworks, and learning resources that cater to their unique contexts. The volunteer will provide demand-driven technical support aimed at enhancing strategic planning, inclusive governance, shared leadership, reflective practices, and adaptive management. This position is integral to the global volunteer network, acting as a resource person who offers targeted and flexible technical assistance to selected in-country CSGs. The volunteer will engage in regular coaching and mentoring, working closely with local partners and the VSO team to customize support based on each CSG’s specific context, readiness, and shared priorities. The overarching goal is to empower these groups to lead their own organizational and operational development effectively.

Collaborate with Civil Society Groups (CSGs) to assess their organizational needs and develop tailored tools and frameworks that enhance their operational capacity.
Provide technical support in strategic planning processes, ensuring that CSGs can effectively set and achieve their goals.
Facilitate workshops and training sessions focused on inclusive governance and leadership practices, promoting shared leadership within CSGs.
Offer ongoing coaching and mentoring to CSG leaders, helping them to reflect on their practices and adapt to changing circumstances.
Work alongside local partners to ensure that the support provided is relevant and responsive to the unique challenges faced by each CSG.
Monitor and evaluate the impact of the support provided, making adjustments as necessary to improve outcomes.
Engage with the broader VSO volunteer network to share knowledge and best practices, contributing to a culture of learning and collaboration.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess expertise in organization design and development, with a strong focus on organizational and operational capacity strengthening. Familiarity with inclusive governance and leadership practices is essential. The ideal applicant should demonstrate a commitment to empowering marginalized communities and possess the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups. Additionally, candidates should exhibit resilience and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in social sciences, development studies, organizational development, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in organizational capacity building or governance will be viewed favorably. Experience: Candidates should have a proven track record of working with civil society organizations or similar entities, ideally in a volunteer capacity. Experience in capacity building, organizational development, and governance practices is highly desirable. Familiarity with the challenges faced by organizations in developing countries will enhance the candidate's effectiveness in this role. Previous experience in coaching or mentoring leaders within organizations is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within VSO and with local partners.
