Job Overview: The Field Security Associate position is located in the UNDSS field office at Mandera, Kenya, and is funded under an Extra-budget arrangement. The role involves assisting the Field Security Coordination Officer in implementing security operations and managing safety and security for UN personnel in the area of responsibility. The Field Security Associate will also extend risk management support to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) through proactive security planning in Mandera County. This position is essential in a fragile context, serving as a shared delivery enabler and ensuring the safety of UN operations. The role requires a commitment to security risk management and the ability to work effectively in challenging environments, contributing to the overall mission of the UN.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Field Security Associate will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Assisting in collecting, updating, and communicating information regarding the security situation in Mandera, liaising with host government security organizations, and assessing the security situation at the duty station.
Maintaining and updating the Security Plan, preparing and reviewing the UN Security Plan, and supporting the implementation of security measures.
Monitoring the implementation of security measures recommended in the Risk Management processes and assisting in reporting security incidents affecting UN staff and assets.
Organizing and conducting training courses on security awareness and providing security orientation to newly assigned staff members.
Conducting security evaluations and advising on Residential Security Measures for UN staff.
Providing general administrative assistance, including maintaining confidential correspondence files and preparing reports on activities and support provided by the Mandera UNLO.
Performing other duties as assigned, ensuring effective communication and coordination with various stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with additional security or military training required. Certification in UN Security Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments for Surge Deployment is desirable. Knowledge of security-related matters in post-conflict setups is also beneficial. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to make quick decisions in emergencies. A commitment to gender equality and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment are essential.
Educational Background: Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Additional security or military training is necessary, along with certification in UN Security Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments for Surge Deployment. A sound knowledge of security-related matters in post-conflict setups is desirable, indicating the need for a well-rounded educational background in security management.
Experience: Candidates must have seven years of work experience in security, risk, disaster, or emergency areas with security responsibilities. This experience can be in public or private service areas, including national security, military, or police, or in a corporate environment. The minimum years of relevant experience may be reduced by two years for candidates with a first-level University degree. Experience in diplomatic security, protection, and intelligence, as well as prior experience with the UN system or similar international organizations, is required. Desirable experience includes engagement in lifesaving and humanitarian operations and familiarity with data analytics or related areas.
Languages: English and Somali are the mandatory working languages for this position. Proficiency in English is required at UN Level II for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Somali is also required at UN Level II for all language skills. Knowledge of French is considered an asset, but not mandatory.
