Job Overview: The National Consultant for gender mediation and conflict prevention will play a crucial role in addressing gender issues within the context of conflict prevention and mediation. This position is designed to support the UNDP's efforts in Guinea-Bissau to enhance gender-sensitive approaches in conflict resolution and peacebuilding initiatives. The consultant will be responsible for conducting a thorough conflict analysis with a specific focus on gender dynamics, identifying key stakeholders, and proposing strategies to integrate gender perspectives into mediation processes. The consultant will work closely with local communities, government entities, and international partners to ensure that gender considerations are effectively incorporated into conflict prevention strategies. This role requires a deep understanding of gender issues, conflict resolution, and the socio-political landscape of Guinea-Bissau.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct a comprehensive conflict analysis that highlights gender-specific issues and dynamics in Guinea-Bissau.
Identify and engage with key stakeholders, including women's organizations, community leaders, and government representatives, to gather insights and foster collaboration.
Develop and propose actionable strategies for integrating gender perspectives into existing conflict prevention and mediation frameworks.
Facilitate workshops and training sessions aimed at enhancing the capacity of local actors to address gender issues in conflict situations.
Provide ongoing support and guidance to UNDP and partners in implementing gender-sensitive approaches in their peacebuilding efforts.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of gender integration in conflict prevention initiatives, providing recommendations for improvement.
Prepare detailed reports and documentation on findings, strategies, and outcomes related to gender mediation and conflict prevention.
Required Qualifications:
Advanced degree in social sciences, gender studies, conflict resolution, or a related field.
Proven experience in gender analysis, conflict resolution, and mediation processes.
Strong understanding of the socio-political context of Guinea-Bissau and the role of gender in conflict dynamics.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders effectively.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a multicultural environment.
Proficiency in relevant software and tools for data analysis and reporting.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess at least a Master's degree in a relevant field such as social sciences, gender studies, international relations, or conflict resolution. A PhD or equivalent experience in a related area will be considered an asset. Educational qualifications should reflect a strong foundation in gender issues and conflict dynamics, with a focus on practical applications in mediation and peacebuilding.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in gender analysis, conflict prevention, or mediation is required. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of the United Nations or similar entities, is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of successfully implementing gender-sensitive approaches in conflict settings and possess a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to gender in peacebuilding efforts.
Languages: Fluency in Portuguese is mandatory, as it is the official language of Guinea-Bissau. Proficiency in English and/or French is considered an asset, as it may facilitate communication with international partners and stakeholders. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Guinea-Bissau would also be beneficial.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as an individual contractor role for a period of 4 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project needs. The consultant will be expected to work full-time and may need to travel within Guinea-Bissau as required. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and the consultant will be responsible for their own taxes and benefits.
