Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been operational in Timor-Leste since August 1999, focusing on various humanitarian efforts including return and reintegration assistance for Timorese individuals affected by the 1999 post-referendum violence. IOM has played a significant role in disarmament and reintegration of ex-combatants and has implemented numerous community stabilization and infrastructure programs. UNICEF has also been active in Timor-Leste since 1999, working to ensure the survival, education, and protection of children. With a country office in Dili and a presence across various municipalities, UNICEF collaborates with government institutions, civil society, and communities to enhance systems and deliver essential services for children and adolescents, focusing on health, education, child protection, and youth engagement. Both organizations are committed to equity, gender equality, and resilience in their programs, aiming to create a safe and nurturing environment for every child in Timor-Leste to reach their full potential.

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position is part of a remote communications team tasked with supporting a campaign aimed at raising awareness about trafficking and smuggling in Timor-Leste. This role involves collaborating with the Media and Communications Officer and the Chief of Mission of IOM Timor Leste, as well as UNICEF’s Social Behaviour Change Focal Point. The primary objective is to produce sufficient content during a 12-week assignment to sustain a six-month communication campaign. The first month will be dedicated to planning and content production, while the subsequent months will focus on the rollout of the campaign. The volunteer will be responsible for creating social media templates and assets, ensuring that all materials align with the campaign's visual identity and are adaptable for various platforms and audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteer will have several key responsibilities, including:
  • Building adaptable social media templates using tools such as Adobe Illustrator or Canva.
  • Designing ready-to-publish social media cards that align with the branding developed by another Graphic Design Online Volunteer.
  • Creating illustrated social media assets for platforms like Facebook and Instagram, ensuring consistency with the campaign's visual identity.
  • Adapting and versioning assets for different audiences and formats (square, vertical, landscape) to optimize visibility.
  • Preparing all final editable files and structured folders for easy adaptation by IOM and UNICEF after the handover.
  • Participating in biweekly coordination calls and collaborating with other volunteers to ensure cohesive output.
  • Following IOM and UNICEF’s communication and protection guidelines, ensuring that no personal or identifiable data of trafficking survivors or at-risk individuals is included in the outputs.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires volunteers to possess a strong understanding of social media platforms and graphic design principles. Familiarity with tools such as Adobe Illustrator or Canva is essential for creating visually appealing content. Volunteers should also have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively collaborate with team members and stakeholders. A background in communications, marketing, or a related field is preferred, along with a passion for social issues, particularly those related to trafficking and migration.

Educational Background:
While specific educational qualifications are not explicitly stated, a degree or coursework in communications, graphic design, marketing, or a related field would be beneficial for this role. The ability to demonstrate relevant skills and experience through a portfolio of previous work may also be considered an asset.

Experience:
The position is suitable for individuals with varying levels of experience in graphic design and social media management. Previous experience working on campaigns related to social issues, particularly in a humanitarian context, would be advantageous. Volunteers should be comfortable working in a remote team environment and possess the ability to manage their time effectively to meet deadlines.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as all communications and outputs will be conducted in English. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in Timor-Leste, such as Tetum or Portuguese, would be considered a plus, enhancing the volunteer's ability to engage with diverse communities.

Additional Notes:
This is a remote volunteer position with a commitment of 12 weeks. The role is part-time, allowing flexibility in working hours. Volunteers will receive orientation on IOM and UNICEF communication standards and will have access to approved campaign materials, logos, and templates. The position does not offer financial compensation, but it provides valuable experience in humanitarian communications and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful social change.
