Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been operational in Timor-Leste since August 1999, focusing on various humanitarian efforts including return and reintegration assistance for Timorese individuals displaced during the 1999 post-referendum violence. IOM has played a significant role in disarmament and reintegration of ex-combatants and has implemented numerous community stabilization and infrastructure programs. UNICEF has also been active in Timor-Leste since 1999, working to ensure the well-being of children through health, education, and protection initiatives. Both organizations collaborate closely with local government and communities to enhance service delivery and promote child welfare, equity, and resilience in the region.

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position is part of a remote communications team tasked with supporting a campaign aimed at raising awareness about trafficking and smuggling in Timor-Leste. This role involves collaborating with IOM and UNICEF to produce content that will sustain a six-month communication campaign. The first month will focus on planning and content production, while the subsequent months will involve the rollout of the campaign materials. The volunteer will be responsible for designing branding elements, ensuring cultural relevance, and adhering to organizational guidelines. The position requires creativity and collaboration with other volunteers to ensure that all outputs align with the campaign's objectives and messaging.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteer will have several key responsibilities, including:
  • Collaborating with the Communications and Social Behaviour Change Focal Points to design the branding identity for the Counter-Trafficking and Anti-Smuggling campaign.
  • Creating visual assets such as logos, character designs, and iconography that are culturally relevant and accessible.
  • Developing a comprehensive campaign guideline document for consistent branding across IOM, UNICEF, and partner agencies.
  • Designing illustrated materials for posters, banners, and printed collateral, ensuring cultural sensitivity and privacy protection.
  • Working closely with other online volunteers to align designs with the campaign's key messages.
  • Participating in biweekly coordination calls and adhering to IOM and UNICEF communication standards.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong graphic design skills, proficiency in design software, and an understanding of branding principles. They should also have the ability to work collaboratively in a remote team environment and be open to feedback. Familiarity with issues related to trafficking and smuggling, as well as experience in creating culturally sensitive materials, is highly desirable. Additionally, volunteers should demonstrate a commitment to the mission and values of IOM and UNICEF.

Educational Background:
A background in graphic design, communications, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have relevant coursework or experience that demonstrates their ability to create effective visual communications and branding materials.

Experience:
While specific years of experience are not mandated, candidates should have a demonstrated ability to produce high-quality design work, preferably in a volunteer or professional capacity. Experience working in international development or humanitarian contexts is a plus, particularly in relation to trafficking and migration issues.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications and materials will be developed in English. Knowledge of Tetum or Portuguese would be advantageous, given the local context and audience.

Additional Notes:
This position is a remote volunteer role with a commitment of 12 weeks. The engagement is part-time, allowing flexibility in hours worked. Volunteers will receive orientation on IOM and UNICEF communication standards and will have access to necessary resources and materials. This role is ideal for individuals looking to gain experience in international development communications while contributing to a significant cause.
