Job Overview: The Officer position within the Office of the Chief Programs Officer at Human Rights Watch is designed to provide comprehensive operational, project, and administrative support to the Deputy director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Executive Director/Chief Programs Officer (DED/CPO). This role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth functioning of the executive department, which is responsible for strategic leadership and direction across HRW's programmatic activities. The Officer will manage the DED/CPO's calendar, coordinate travel logistics, facilitate communication with internal and external stakeholders, and support the Program Leadership Team (PLT) in various administrative capacities. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a hybrid working schedule, balancing in-office and remote work as determined by the needs of the DED/CPO. This position requires a proactive approach to managing departmental processes and operations, ensuring that the CPO is well-prepared for meetings and that all necessary documentation is organized and accessible.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to: managing the calendar of the DED/CPO to optimize time usage; handling sensitive and confidential communications; coordinating travel arrangements; maintaining effective communication with staff and external stakeholders; supporting fundraising efforts by liaising with the Development & Outreach department; preparing documents and presentations; organizing meetings and events; ensuring the completion of departmental processes and projects; maintaining data and filing systems; assisting in recruitment and onboarding of staff; processing expenses and invoices; and performing various administrative tasks as required. The role demands a high level of organization, discretion, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, preferably in business administration, nonprofit management, or a related field. A minimum of three years of high-level administrative experience is required, ideally in a global organization. The candidate should demonstrate strong organizational, project management, and analytical skills, along with excellent written and oral communication abilities in English. The ability to work independently, manage sensitive information discreetly, and maintain confidentiality is essential. Proficiency in computer skills and a proactive approach to improving internal processes are highly valued. Interpersonal skills are crucial for effective collaboration within the team and with external contacts, including high-level stakeholders.
Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in business administration, nonprofit management, or a related field is required. Equivalent work experience or training may also be considered. The educational background should provide a solid foundation for understanding the complexities of administrative support in a global organization focused on human rights.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of three years of high-level administrative experience, particularly in providing support to senior executives in a global context. Experience in international affairs and human rights is highly desirable, as it aligns with the mission and activities of Human Rights Watch. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of managing complex administrative tasks and projects effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in another language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to HRW's global mission.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC, with a hybrid working schedule. Candidates must have valid US work authorization, as HRW is unable to sponsor work authorization for this role. The salary range for this position is USD 66,000 – 68,000, and HRW offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits.
