Job Posting Organization: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UNICEF have been operational in Timor-Leste since 1999, focusing on various humanitarian and developmental initiatives. IOM has played a crucial role in providing return and reintegration assistance to Timorese individuals affected by the 1999 post-referendum violence, while UNICEF has been dedicated to ensuring the well-being of children in the region. Both organizations work closely with local government, civil society, and communities to deliver essential services and support systems for vulnerable populations, particularly children and adolescents. Their collaborative efforts aim to address pressing issues such as trafficking, migration, and child protection, with a strong commitment to equity and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges.
Job Overview: The Online Volunteer position is designed to support a comprehensive digital information campaign aimed at raising awareness about safe migration practices and combating trafficking and smuggling in Timor-Leste. The role involves working remotely as part of a communications team, collaborating closely with the IOM Media and Communications Officer and UNICEF's Social Behaviour Change Focal Point. The primary objective is to develop a strategic, evidence-based campaign plan that will be implemented over six months. The first month will focus on planning and content production, while the subsequent months will involve the rollout of the campaign materials. Volunteers will be responsible for ensuring that all outputs are culturally appropriate and aligned with the communication standards of IOM and UNICEF, thereby contributing to a protective environment for at-risk communities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Volunteer will have a range of responsibilities, including:
Assisting in the development of a strategic digital information campaign plan that outlines key messages, target audiences, channels, and monitoring indicators.
Facilitating regular coordination meetings with other Online Volunteers and agencies involved in the campaign to ensure coherence and collaboration.
Compiling feedback from IOM, UNICEF, and the Government of Timor-Leste to refine the campaign work plan.
Tracking the progress of content development and implementation, providing brief weekly updates on the status of the campaign.
Ensuring that all campaign materials are culturally appropriate, accessible, and adhere to IOM and UNICEF standards.
Participating in biweekly coordination calls to discuss progress and address any challenges encountered during the campaign rollout.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and have a good understanding of digital communication strategies. Familiarity with issues related to trafficking, migration, and child protection is highly desirable. Additionally, volunteers should demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in a remote team environment and be proactive in seeking feedback and guidance from supervisors and peers. A commitment to the values and standards of IOM and UNICEF is essential, as is the ability to produce culturally sensitive and impactful communication materials.
Educational Background: A background in communications, social sciences, international relations, or a related field is preferred for this position. Candidates should have relevant coursework or experience that demonstrates their understanding of communication strategies and their application in humanitarian or developmental contexts.
Experience: While prior experience in communications or campaign development is beneficial, it is not strictly required. However, candidates should be able to demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge that would enable them to contribute effectively to the campaign. Experience working in a multicultural environment or with vulnerable populations is a plus, as it will enhance the volunteer's ability to engage with the target communities effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as all communications and materials will be developed in English. Knowledge of Tetum or Portuguese would be advantageous, as these languages are commonly spoken in Timor-Leste and could facilitate better engagement with local communities.
Additional Notes: This is a remote volunteer position with a commitment of approximately 12 weeks. The role is part-time, allowing flexibility in working hours. Volunteers will receive orientation and training on IOM and UNICEF communication standards, and they will have access to approved campaign materials and templates. The position is open to international applicants, and all outputs must adhere to strict guidelines to protect the privacy and identity of trafficking survivors and at-risk individuals.
