The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO) play a crucial role in supporting countries to meet their development priorities and SDGs, led by an empowered UN Resident Coordinator who represents the UN Secretary-General at the country level.

Job Overview:
The Associate Data Analyst position is integral to the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Kabul, Afghanistan. The role involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including counterparts, technical staff, and external partners, to develop and implement databases, data collection systems, and analytics that enhance statistical efficiency and quality. The Associate Data Analyst will engage in data engineering and data science activities, contributing to the overall mission of the UN in promoting sustainable development. The position requires a proactive approach to data management, ensuring that data-driven insights are effectively communicated to support decision-making processes within the organization. The incumbent will also be responsible for tracking progress on data initiatives and contributing to the capacity building of staff in data analytics.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Data Analyst will be responsible for a range of duties, including but not limited to:
  • Implementing databases and data collection systems that optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
  • Analyzing and interpreting data trends using statistical methods.
  • Improving processes for data analytics tasks and maintaining databases.
  • Developing reports and dashboards to summarize findings for management.
  • Tracking and reporting on department-specific data initiatives.
  • Creating data visualization outputs to aid in decision-making.
  • Assisting with data collection and initial analysis for project tasks.
  • Producing data products such as reports or newsletters.
  • Gathering business requirements across departments to support data-driven analysis. 1
  • Compiling data insights and preparing materials for stakeholder communications. 1
  • Staying updated on trends in data analytics best practices and technologies. 1
  • Supporting capacity-building activities for staff on data analytics. 1
  • Assisting in administrative aspects of the work plan related to data preparation and reporting.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of sustainable development theories and concepts. They should demonstrate the ability to identify and develop sources for data collection, conduct research, analyze data, and write reports on sustainable development issues. Professionalism, effective communication skills, and teamwork are essential competencies for this role. The candidate should also be able to incorporate gender perspectives into their work and ensure equal participation of women and men in all areas.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in fields such as computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, applied mathematics, information management, or a related quantitative field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in translating business requirements into technical solutions is required. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in data validation, quality assurance of data analysis outputs, and familiarity with data storytelling and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, and R. Knowledge of the data life cycle, including data collection, wrangling, analysis, visualization, deployment, monitoring, and reporting, is desirable. Project management skills are also beneficial for this position.

Languages:
English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Additionally, proficiency in Dari and Pashto is required at the same level. These language skills are essential for effective communication within the UN and with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This is a fixed-term limited position with an initial appointment period of one year, subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval. The position is open to nationals of Afghanistan only, and candidates residing outside Afghanistan may be considered if no suitable local candidates are identified.
