Job Overview: The Senior Mining Specialist position at the World Bank involves contributing to the design and implementation of operations and knowledge activities in the mining sector, particularly in the ASEAN region, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Mining Specialist will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Contributing to the development of the World Bank’s strategy and service responses to the challenges in the mineral sector.
Leading operational work and policy dialogue with countries and within the World Bank Group on mineral sector issues.
Focusing on ongoing mining sector financing and advisory support to countries in the ASEAN region, PNG, Solomon Islands, and Indonesia.
Providing expert policy and technical advice on frameworks for mineral development, governance, and mine closures.
Developing innovative approaches to support mining projects, including decarbonization strategies.
Partnering with other World Bank Group entities and external stakeholders to implement mining initiatives.
Conducting outreach and delivering presentations to various audiences.
Maintaining relationships with Country Management Units and mentoring junior staff.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of a master’s degree or higher in a mining-related discipline such as natural resource management, mineral economics, geology, or engineering. Additionally, a minimum of 8 years of international work experience in the mining industry is required, with a significant portion ideally gained in the private sector. Candidates should have a strong background in policy, regulatory frameworks, and sustainability issues related to mining, as well as experience in project management and stakeholder engagement. Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively are essential.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a master’s degree or higher in a relevant field such as natural resource management, mineral economics, geology, or engineering. The degree should be from a reputable university, reflecting a strong foundation in the technical and analytical skills necessary for the role.
Experience: The position requires at least 8 years of broad international work experience in the mining sector, with a focus on development agendas. Experience in Asia is preferred, particularly in areas related to mining investment, government relations, and policy frameworks. Candidates should have a proven track record of working on mining projects in developing economies, demonstrating an understanding of the complexities and challenges faced in these regions.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, with excellent written and oral communication skills being essential. Proficiency in French is preferred but not required.
