Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) was established by the UN General Assembly to promote sustainable human settlements development and ensure adequate shelter for all. It serves as the focal point agency for urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed cities and towns with adequate housing, infrastructure, and universal access to essential services such as water, energy, and sanitation. The organization operates globally, engaging in various projects across more than 60 countries and 80 cities, focusing on urban planning, design, and resilience.

Job Overview:
The Junior Urban Planner Consultant will provide technical expertise on urban planning and design, particularly in the areas of water, climate, and urban resilience, while engaging with stakeholders. This role is crucial for the Urban Lab, which aims to deliver transformative solutions to complex urban challenges through an integrated approach to planning. The consultant will work closely with a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the development of projects that align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders and the ability to manage knowledge in complex settings to address multi-sectoral challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including conducting reviews, desk research, and data gathering on policies related to urban planning and resilience. They will provide technical support for project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and normative production within the Urban Lab. The consultant will also develop presentations and training materials, facilitate workshops, and support participatory processes tailored to specific project contexts. Additionally, they will contribute to Urban Lab documents, assist in developing country proposals, and help expand the Urban Lab project portfolio.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in Architecture, Urban Development and Planning, or a related field. A Master’s degree or equivalent in these areas is considered an asset. Relevant work experience of at least 2 years in sustainable urban development or urban planning is required, particularly with a focus on integrating water and climate resilience into urban systems. Experience in organizing workshops and stakeholder meetings is also necessary.

Educational Background:
The position requires a first-level university degree in a relevant field such as Architecture, Urban Development, or Planning. A Master’s degree in these areas is advantageous and may enhance a candidate's qualifications for the role.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in sustainable urban development or urban planning. This experience should include a focus on integrating water, climate resilience, and urban systems, as well as organizing and facilitating workshops and stakeholder meetings.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is also beneficial, as it is the second working language of the UN.
