Job Overview: The Consultant for Gender Action Plan will play a crucial role in supporting the Knowledge and Risk Unit of the Chemicals and Health Branch within UNEP. This position is focused on executing the Supply Chains Integrated Programme, particularly in updating and implementing the gender action plan (GAP). The consultant will ensure that gender considerations are integrated into project knowledge and communication products, coordinate gender networks, and strengthen the capacity of country project gender focal points. The role requires a deep understanding of gender mainstreaming and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to promote gender-responsive project implementation. The consultant will also be responsible for monitoring and reporting on gender integration across projects, ensuring that gender indicators are effectively tracked and analyzed to assess progress.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for a variety of duties, including:
Updating and implementing the gender action plan (GAP) by developing a comprehensive 2026 GAP for the Global Coordination Project, including activities, timelines, and responsibilities.
Revising the programmatic GAP to align with project objectives and developing an implementation roadmap with monitoring tools.
Coordinating gender networks and thematic meetings, ensuring that content is gender-sensitive and aligned with the GAP.
Supporting gender monitoring and reporting by reviewing project documents and providing recommendations for improving gender integration.
Collaborating with stakeholder engagement and communications consultants to ensure gender responsiveness in knowledge products.
Providing support in stakeholder consultations and meetings as required, and assisting with other tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in gender studies, social studies, political or philosophy studies, environment, international relations, or a closely related area. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Additionally, candidates should have at least 5 years of practical working experience in gender mainstreaming and gender-responsive project implementation, along with proven experience in developing and implementing Gender Action Plans (GAPs) and formulating gender-responsive indicators.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in relevant fields such as gender studies, social studies, political or philosophy studies, environment, or international relations. A first-level university degree may be accepted with additional qualifying experience, demonstrating the importance of both formal education and practical experience in this role.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of practical experience in gender mainstreaming and gender-responsive project implementation. Experience in developing and implementing Gender Action Plans (GAPs) and collecting sex-disaggregated data is essential. Desirable experience includes coordinating gender focal point networks and contributing to knowledge products from a gender perspective, particularly in sectors related to chemicals, sustainable development, or environmental governance.
Languages: Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for this position, as English is the working language of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of Spanish is considered desirable, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate in a multicultural environment and engage with diverse stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is home-based and allows for remote work, with an expected duration of 4 months at 50% (part-time). The role does not involve any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, as the United Nations does not charge applicants for applications, interviews, or training.
