Job Overview: The Head of the Arabic Language Service is a pivotal role within the IAEA's Language Services Section, responsible for overseeing the quality and delivery of Arabic language content. This position requires a strong command of the Arabic language, as well as expertise in editing, translating, and revising a wide range of documents, including administrative, legal, economic, scientific, and technical materials. The incumbent will report directly to the Section Head and will be tasked with managing a team of professional staff and freelancers, ensuring that all content produced meets the high standards expected by the IAEA. The role also involves identifying and training new talent, providing guidance and support to team members, and implementing best practices in language services. The Head of the Arabic Language Service must be adept at working under tight deadlines and be able to make authoritative decisions regarding terminology and language use. This position is integral to the IAEA's mission of promoting multilingualism and ensuring effective communication across its diverse member states.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan and coordinate the work of the Arabic Language Service team, ensuring efficient workflow and high-quality output.
Revise and edit Arabic content produced by staff and freelancers, ensuring accuracy and adherence to IAEA standards.
Draft, translate, and edit documents as required, maintaining a high level of linguistic quality.
Assess the competence of team members and new talent, providing training and support as necessary.
Make authoritative decisions on terminology and language issues, ensuring consistency across all Arabic language outputs.
Provide input on the assessment of linguistic competence for proofreading tasks within the Multilingual Output Production Team.
Implement innovative solutions and best practices in the production of Arabic language content.
Collaborate with other language teams and departments to facilitate effective communication and knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications:
Advanced university degree (Master's) in translation, languages, or a related field. A Bachelor's degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in translation and language services.
At least four years of experience in an international organization, public sector, or non-profit organization is preferred.
Experience in supervising teams of translators is an asset.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and IT translation tools, particularly Trados Studio and MultiTerm.
Excellent oral and written command of Arabic and English; knowledge of other IAEA official languages (Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's) in translation, languages, or a related field. Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in the same fields, combined with two additional years of relevant experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is essential to ensure that candidates have the necessary linguistic and analytical skills required for the role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in the field of translation and language services. Additional Notes: The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $101,540, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance. Additional benefits include a variable post adjustment, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, and six weeks of annual leave.
