Job Overview: The consultant will support the implementation of the 'Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea' (PROMAR) project, which is funded by the Government of Germany and executed by the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat. The primary goal of this project is to reduce plastic waste entering the Caribbean Sea and to promote circular economy practices. The consultant will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing project implementation, preparing written outputs, providing support for meetings, and contributing to reporting on project progress. This role is critical in ensuring that the project meets its objectives and effectively addresses the challenges of marine litter and plastic pollution in the Caribbean region.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in the implementation and evaluation of project activities, monitoring and analyzing project implementation, reviewing relevant documents and reports, identifying problems and proposing corrective actions.
Prepare various written outputs, including draft background papers, analyses, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications.
Provide substantive support to consultative and other meetings, including contributing to agenda topics, identifying participants, and preparing documents and presentations.
Make presentations on assigned topics and activities.
Contribute to reporting on progress, challenges, opportunities, and learnings encountered during implementation.
Participate in monthly status update calls with the PROMAR lead implementer, Adelphi.
Work closely with the PROMAR National Communications UNV.
Perform other duties as required, reporting directly to the AMEP Programme Management Officer at the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat regarding the status of deliverables.
Required Qualifications: A Master’s degree or equivalent in environmental/natural resource management, conservation, management, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree in environmental management or a related field with 7 years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental or natural resources management, or a related area at regional and national levels is required. Demonstrated experience in project management and stakeholder coordination is essential, along with good organizational and interpersonal skills. A good understanding of region-specific challenges related to waste and plastics management is also desirable.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in environmental/natural resource management, conservation, management, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree in environmental management or a related field with significant relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative qualification.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental or natural resources management, or a related area at both regional and national levels. Experience in project management and stakeholder coordination is essential, and familiarity with the Wider Caribbean Region's governmental and intergovernmental organizations is desirable.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Additional Notes: The consultancy is expected to last for 12 months and will be home-based. Payment will be contingent upon the approval of deliverables by the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat.
