Job Overview: The Public Information Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of communication strategies and public information activities for IOM Yemen. This position requires a proactive approach to managing internal and external communications, ensuring that the organization's work is effectively communicated to various audiences. The incumbent will be responsible for supervising a team across multiple offices, ensuring alignment in work plans, and addressing any operational issues that may arise. The role involves frequent field missions to gather human-interest stories and multimedia content that showcase IOM's efforts in migration and displacement. The officer will also be tasked with enhancing IOM Yemen's visibility through social media platforms and other communication channels, contributing to the organization's overall mission of promoting awareness and understanding of migration issues.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the implementation of communication strategies and public information activities in line with established action plans.
Supervise and coordinate a team across multiple offices, ensuring effective communication and alignment of work plans.
Conduct field missions to collect human-interest stories, photographs, and videos that highlight IOM's work.
Produce and prepare audiovisual content for IOM Yemen's social media accounts, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
Assist in the preparation of external situation reports, visibility materials, and press briefing notes.
Collect and curate public information materials that illustrate IOM's actions and results in Yemen.
Liaise with programmatic units to support coordination of public information-related activities.
Promote IOM's work through local, regional, and international media channels.
Implement outreach activities and media campaigns to enhance IOM's image and increase awareness of its activities. 1
Undertake duty travel as required and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma with six years of professional experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, filmmaking, photography, or a related field from an accredited institution with four years of professional experience.
Practical experience in supporting awareness-raising or visibility activities.
Familiarity with Communications with Communities (CWC) and behavior-change communication approaches is an advantage.
High competency in English writing is essential.
Knowledge of photography, graphic design, web, social media, and video production is advantageous.
Experience in capacity-building of staff and external counterparts is preferred.
Experience working with international organizations is beneficial.
Experience in media engagement and training in humanitarian contexts is a plus. 1
Experience in storytelling with communities affected by crises and gender-related sensitivities is desirable.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess either a high school diploma with six years of relevant professional experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as communications, public relations, filmmaking, or photography from an accredited academic institution, along with four years of professional experience. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, ensuring that the educational qualifications meet international standards.
Experience: The position requires a significant level of experience, specifically a minimum of six years of professional experience for candidates with a high school diploma, or four years for those with a Bachelor’s degree. Candidates should have practical experience in supporting awareness-raising or visibility activities, with a strong emphasis on digital communications and media engagement. Familiarity with humanitarian contexts and experience in storytelling with affected communities are also important aspects of the required experience.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Arabic is mandatory for all applicants, encompassing both oral and written communication skills. IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may be evaluated during the selection process, which could involve written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Yemen will be considered. The selection process may be used to fill similar positions in various duty stations, and recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in similar roles for a period of 24 months. Any offer made to the candidate is contingent upon funding confirmation. Candidates must also be certified as medically fit for appointment, and their residency, visa, and other authorizations will be verified as applicable.
